Bald Butt= What could it be?

Sorry for the title but it says it all. My moms Golden has gotten a really ugly bald patch on her butt where she used to have very abundant feathering. What could this be? She came down with a bit of mange last year but I dont think its mange again, when she had mange the skin had a different look to it.

The skin where she has gotten bald looks quite normal though I haven gotten a really up close look at it. It sort of looks like someone shaved her behind [&:]

What could this be?

flea allergy? (sounds like what our lab had when we lived in Georgia)

My lab, Sassy, had the exact same thing last year. No apparent irritation, skin looked good, she didn't chew it or anything, but she had what I called a "monkey butt". It was the oddest thing I'd ever seen. We were treating her for some other skin problems (feet) and so she was put on antibiotics but also at the same time, we had her thyroid tested, it came back super low and we started meds. I'm not sure which helped, the antibiotics or the thyroid meds, but the fur filled back in (pretty quickly too) and she's never had it again. My first suggestion is to get her thyroid tested.

At what age do thyroid problems usually show up? Man this has been one weird pup. Out of a litter of 10 she is definately the weirdest one, yet the sweetest!

I'll speak to my mom about that, she has always had these weird sking problems. For some reason I thought it might be a problem with the anal glands because of the location, but I dont know ANYTHING about the anal glands so what should I know? [8D]

Also cakana, it does look like a "monkey butt" perfect description...lol!

Lots of things cause hair loss. Mange, flea bite dermatitis, ringworm, folliculitis, thyroid imbalance, etc. I think you may need to spring for the vet visit.

Thyroid problems typically show up after the age of 3, and are more common in spayed females, but it can also show up earlier and/or in intact females. I thought anal glands with Sassy last year too, but she had none of the other symptoms. Sassy has lots of skin problems too, but the bald butt thing was different and she didn't appear to chew it and I have never seen her drag her bottom. As I said, I can't honestly say if this was one of her many infections and responded to antibiotics or was the thyroid and responded to thyroid meds since we tested and treated for both about the same time. As Anne said, I think it's probably time for a visit to the vet.
