Whipworms?

    Whipworms?

I have a 6 month old black lab mix.  The vet yesterday diagnosed him as having whipworms.  How serious are these and are they a pain to get rid of?  They gave me a 3 day treatment of some kind of powder and we are going to be starting him on Interceptor.  Is there any way to prevent him from getting any further cases of these?  I do like to take him to the local dog park, which is where I think he got them because I have heard other people talking about their dogs getting worms from there.  Is it safe to keep going back there?

Whips are tough to get rid of sometimes because they can live in the soil for a long time.  You will need regular follow up fecals done to check for them for awhile.  I would think that once you've treated him for the worms he has now and started him on Interceptor it would be ok to take him back to the dog park.  Do you have other dogs?   They should probably be tested and treated too.  Also they are probably now in your yard so you should be careful about having other dogs there.  If you do some internet research you can find out more.  I had a dog with it about 4 years ago and haven't had a problem since.

We just had this same problem about 3 weeks ago.  My pug started to lose weight so i rushed him into the vet.  I was told he had whipworms.  Gave me meds for all 3 dogs and decided to change from Heartguard to Interceptor because i takes care of all those worms.  He said once he starts the Interceptor he should be fine.  As long as you have your dog on Interceptor you shouldn't have to worry about him getting them anymore because it protects against them like it does heartworms.
