    Previcox vs estogesic for arthritis

Has anyone had experience giving previcox  to dog?    My vet wants to switch my lab to it from estogesic (which has worked well for several years now)  Dog is 12 1/2 yrs old.    Husband says previcox is what they took off the market for humans..
All I get from my vet is .. "is works better "  ..

They are both NSAIDS and all could cause problems. Personally I wouldn't change from one to another if my dog was doing well on one for several years.  But keep in mind that all have caused problems in dogs and there are things you must watch out for. Your vet should have a paper for you to read on either of the drugs.
By the way, the FDA has taken a couple NSAIDS off the market for humans so I'm not sure if you can compare, but it seems that Previcox might be one of the newer ones.
See this link to compare NSAIDS and their adverse reactions.

Previcox is one of those 'wonder drugs' - but it takes a heavy heavy toll on the body.  Dogsadversereactions is a GOOD place to start.

There are a lot of other ways to deal with arthritis and pain -- acupuncture WORKS incredibly well, and there are a lot of others.  They may not be as "simple" as just a pill a day, but not as damaging to the body either.  If you want some arthritis suggestions feel free to email me.

I have to agree, I've seen wonders with acupuncture in dogs with joint problems.

I also give my dog yucca root for her arthritus, I've found that to work just as good as glucosimine. It's funny, if you look at Gizmo you would never think she has arthritus. I've also seen estogesic work wonders on joint pain in dogs but Previcox is farly new and I'm not shure exacty how well it workes, the vet I work for just orderd some for one of his clients so we'll see...

According to my druggist, Rimadyl was a human drug under a different name, to much liver damage, pulled from the market as a human drug, but then given to our dogs.  KayCee had the EtoGesic after her 2ed knee surgery and I had no problem with it.  However, at the time i didn't even know about the dangers of the NSAIDs and now, they, especially Rimadyl and Deramaxx will be last resorts, or for terminal dogs.

Thanks to each of you for your response.  They have given me options to research, learn, and make a much more informative decision - and not to mention the most important -- SUPPORT!.
I have had no success in finding a vet near Chattanooga, Tn that does acupuncture, but I will continue to search..
