Dark scabs in ears

    Dark scabs in ears

    Hi Everyone,
I have 3 ***-a-poos of which 2 have allergies.  We've been able to control this with their diet.  We found that both dogs were allergic to dairy products, including dairy products in the dry dog food.
But, the major battle is that they both have very dry skin.  We've had the hot spots and medication helped but the vet bills were very expensive.  (Actually, the suggestion to use Gold Bond was a great idea.  It's not expensive and it works.  Thank you for the advice !)
The problem is that the inside of the ears develope dry crusty black areas in the ear because of the dry skin.  The dogs start to itch, driving all of us nuts.  The end result is the ears are filled with black-waxy flakes stuck to the hair in the ear.  The vet checked for infection but he said there wasn't any.  I have to clean their ears 2-3 times a week.  I give them salmon oil several times a week and I just started giving them vitamin E.  This seems to slow down the process but I can't seem to get rid of the "crusties" in the ears.  Any ideas???  [8|]

I have to remember (which I don't half of the time) to remember to take a cotton ball with peroxide mixed with tee tree oil, and clean out Bubblegums ears with it every week or so,,,and that gets rid of the the dark crusty things for her. The key is always remembering to do it.

Thanks !  That sounds like a great idea.  I'll give it a try.  ( Boy, do I know how hard it is to remember everything.....especially with 3 dogs.  Maybe I am a little goofy, but worth every mimute with them.)

Hi;  Your dog is adorable. Jessie has many allergies and has had itchy ears the last few weeks; they don't get any crusty stuff in them though. I found a product online to try; it's called Maxi/Guard Zn 4.5 Otic. It is not a cleaner; it is antipruitic and has a zinc and amino acid formula which is supposed to "encourage natural healing of problem ears." I started using it yesterday so it's too early to say if it helps with the itching. You're supposed to clean the ears before applying it and use 5 to 8 drops twice a day. Here is a link to the company's website describing what the product does;      [linkhttp://www.addisonlabs.com/ZN45Otic.htm]http://www.addisonlabs.com/ZN45Otic.htm[/link]

    From the description, it should help your dog. The cheapest place I found to order it from is paylessvet;

It took a week to receive it after ordering but I ordered it last Monday so the July Fourth holiday probably delayed it.
I hope Dyan doesn't mind if I say this but if you use the tea tree oil and peroxide solution please check with your vet first or make sure it doesn't get deep enough to affect the ear drum. I once asked my vet if I could use Bactoderm ( a veterinary ointment for skin infections) on some pimples in the upper part of Jessie's ear and he said no because if it got into the ear canal it would cause problems, so that's why I think you should check with your vet first. Good luck and I hope Dyan's suggestion works.

    "Thanks" jessies_mom,
I really appreciate the info on the website for Maxi/Guard Zn 4.5 Otic.  I just ordered some today.  Between the peroxide and the meds, I'm sure we'll get the problem under control.  We all hate to have our pups/dogs misserable if we can help them. [:)]
I'll let you both know how we do !

I hope the Maxi/Guard helps your dogs; I just started using it yesterday but Jessie doesn't seem to be shaking her head as much. Good luck.

SpunkiesMom; How is your dog doing; did the MaxiGuard help? It has been helping Jessie's ears when they itch; I hope it's helping your pup.

    Hi Jessies_mom,
The MaxiGuard really did the trick.  The dark scabs are under control.  Thank you for the advice.  I hope your suggestion helps other dog owners too.
P.S.  Sorry I haven't responded quicker but I haven't had internet connection for awhile.  Lightning was the culprit [:(]

Every time I saw that at work it was an infection... when was the last time the vet said no infection?  Anyhow... even if it is you can pretty much cure it at home with the right ear cleaner.  You know how to get deep down clean?... fill the ears with solution and massage at the base firmly so you hear it squishing around, then wipe with a cotton ball where you can and they will continue to shake and more and more will come up and out of the ear.

I guess Im just trying to say that it sounds like you need to be getting way in there as if it was an infection and not just treating where you can reach with your fingers.   Just a thought, good luck.

loveyoukay; Jessie had the black stuff in her ears before and the vet said it was not an infection but was caused by allergies. The MaxiGuard is drops that you put in the ear and massage; it is not an ear cleaner but a zinc and amino acid formula that prevents bacterial and yeast infections. The zinc helps the skin to be more resistant to irritation. It also helps when Jessie's ears itch because of her allergies; her ears don't itch as much when I use it.

I hope your power wasn't out too long; there's been some nasty storms in some parts of the country lately. I came across this product when I was checking out an ear cleaner someone recommended; it was on the same website and it's the only product I've seen that has zinc to strengthen the skin in the ear so I ordered it and it does reduce the ithing in Jessie's ears.
