Panacur can be used for tape worms but it is best to go to the vet for the proper dosage per you dogs weight.
Tapes are from fleas so I would suggest you start there to help to keep from getting re-infected

Drontal plus can also be used

Puppies should NOT be sent home with tapes, or with fleas.  This is something that the breeder should have taken care of and since she didn't, I'm going to STRONGLY advice that you get your pup to the vet for a complete check up as well as worm treatment.

cant they also get tapeworms and other worms from coming in contact with other dogs poop?

I don't believe so Jaye.  I think they come solely from ingesting fleas.

are the vets misinformed?  because thats what they tell me, that they can get it from poop.  even though it may originally be caused from a flea.  because worms come out in the poop.  and if like they say, humans can contract it from their dogs if they are infected, it wouldnt be from ingesting a flea.

I'm not going to say that vets are wrong on this, because honestly I don't know.  When we have worms of any kind I always treat everyone, even if they have clean fecals, cuz when the worms come out someone is likely to pick them up one way or another.....at least in my mind.  So, I guess if the vets have TOLD you that, they must be right and I must be mistaken...which does happen now and then! Tapeworms usually have an intermediate host that must be eaten be the difinitive host to infect the intestinal track (i.e. the dog eats the flee, people eating mealy pork infected with pork tapeworm cysts).

Many nematodes' eggs are passed through the feces and develope in the ground to larvae... once the larvae contaminate food or water and are eaten, they then cause the infection. I do believe, however, some species are passed directly through the feces, although I may be incorrect in that...

the eggs would also be ingested when dogs actually eat the poop, a lot of dogs do that,  the vet said its wise to not even let your dog smell poop.  i would have to agree with that.
