    Pneumonia or Distemper

Hello everyone.  I just wanted to post a msg just to say thanks.  Although i never posted before, i have been reading when my puppy got sick a few weeks ago.
I just got my puppy from the humane society and was told he had kennel cough.
Well 5 days later he became much much worse.  Very labored breathing, no eating or drinking.  The vet just gave us anibiotics and a syringe to force liquid down his throat.  After no improvement the next morning we called the vet again, he wanted
to change his antibiotics but didnt need to see the puppy again.  He said he was pretty sure it was Disptemper and its 80pct fatal in puppies.  As you can imagine, i couldnt stop crying.  The previous night i was reading other stories on this site that may give me some ideas on what i can do or expect.  Most people's advise was to get a second opinion.  I decided to do just that when the vet told me to come get the new meds and no need to bring in the puppy.  Im so happy i did.  My new vet saved his life.  She admitted him immediately to get an IV in him cuz he was so dehydrated.  She kept him for 3 days and ran tests, xrays ect ect.  I am happy to say he's been back home for 2 weeks now and is a perfectly happy healthy puppy.  She told us he had pneumonia and although that is a symtom of Distemper she said it was unlikely.  I do realize Distemper is difficult to diagnose, i was happy she made the effort to save him in the first place.  I felt the original vet should have done that.  Sorry about the babble....just want to stress to get a second opinion, it could save your pet's life as it did mine.  Thanks
    Jo

Wow - that's a great story to share!!!  Thank you and I'm so happy that you did get the 2nd opinion and found a vet who cared enough to go the extra distance.  That's the one I'd continue with from now on, that's for sure.  So happy your pup is healthy and happy with you now.

How right you are about getting second opinions, especially if the first vet does not seem all that interested in your dog.  I am glad all is going well for him.
