    Tavist

    Can someone please give me the proper dosage for clemastine (Tavist)? My dog is 15 pounds.
    Thanks!

    According to this veterinary website which lists dosage by weight for several antihistamines she should have a half tablet twice a day;

     Jessie's derm vet says she can have 2 twice a day and she's 62 pounds so this site seems accurate. I hope the Tavist helps; Walmart makes a copy called dayhist allergy and it's much cheaper.

    My Pill Book Guide to Medications for Your Dog and Cat says:

    0.025-0.05 mg/lb twice a day.

    The tablets are 1.34 and 2.68 (both over the counter I think).

    So the minimal dose is .375 mg for a 15 pound dog  which is less than 1/3 of a pill.  But even at the higher dose 1/2 of the small pill should be ok but that IS a *maximum* dose.

    I know vets seem to be prescribing Tavist far more strong than they typically prescribe Benedryl.  I do know that when my dog took it, it reacted very badly on him and actually caused an allergic reaction where he was monstrously thirsty for DAYS (I mean he was drinking quarts of water and crying for more).  This was beyond the normal "it makes them thirsty" -- this was literally an allergic reaction he had to it.

    Just wanted to give what the book said.  (and my vet confirmed this doseage when I was thinking of trying it on Muffin).

    Oh, okay thanks. I guess I will give her 1/3 of a pill from now on? But boy, that is one TINY pill! lol
    So far, she hasn't had any reaction to it.

    Did the vet or dermatologist tell you what to take and how much? I would see a good derm.

    A while back she was on an off brand of Tavist, but then she stopped taking it ( don't remember why...). The vet i go to hasn't been very helpful with Jetta's allergies, and there are no derm vets in my area. So I pretty much have to deal with her allergies on my own (with the help of idoggers of course!!). I decided to go back to the clemastine, but since it insn't the exact same brand, i needed the proper dosage.

    You should be able to go to the public library and find a Veterinary PDR in the reference section.

    And yeah -- they are TEENY weenie pills -- that's why I posted what I did -- clemastine is a pain with small dogs cos it's tough to break them at all accurately.
