Doggie is sick

    Doggie is sick

    Long time, I-doggers...

Anyway, my Dog, Lucy, a lab/pit mix was sick last night.  Right when I got home from work, I sat down on the couch to eat dinner with dw, and she started doing the heavs.... So I grabbed a short and intercepted the yellow bile from hitting the floor...

She threw up twice right then. Later in the evening she vomited in my office... and then she vomited in bed this morning around 4 am, and then again on the floor around 5 oclock.

This just started suddenly, and I can't figure a cause... she pooped fine last night, didn't touch her supper but did poop some fecal matter with grass this morning. So I don't think it's blockage...

I am wondering if it can be stress.  We are in the middle of moving, so the table she normally hid under is apart, the apartment is in shambles... Is it possilbe that all this has upset her, and made her sick?

Did she eat this morning? Is she drinking water?
Have you checked her gums, eyes and taken her temp?
    • Bronze
We didn't feed her this morning, actually I tried giving her a piece of watermelon, but she turned it down (VERY UNUSUAL) she drank a LITTLE bit of water, but I am concerned about her becoming dehydrated, so I crushed up some watermelon, and gave her some watermelon juice to drink, and she laped that up pretty good....

Her gums seemed moist, her eyes were a little red, and she didn't feel warm...

Hold off on any food for about 12 hrs. If she continues to vomit after she drinks water, take that away also. Cause it only makes them more dehydrated. You can either give her some pedialyte or gator aid to help rehydrate her. The only way you would know if she is running a temp is to take her temp via rectum. Norm temp is between 100 and 102 deg. Gums are not pale? Are they pink? If you push in on the gum with your finger nail does it turn white then go back to normal color quickly?
Does she look bloated? Is she lythargic?

edited to add is she still vomiting?

My neighbor checked on her at noon, and she hadn't vomited since this morning.. I am expecting an update any time now...

I didn't press her gums.. but gatoraid or pedialyte is a good Idea... and no i didn't check her temp... if I get home and she is sick, I wll go ahead and get a thermometer and check it...

I was going to take her to the vet this morning but dw wanted to wait and see if it was just a bug or something...

Oh yea, and this morning she was lethargic didn't want to get out of bed... she went downstairs and back upstairs ok... when she saw a neighbors dog she perked up a bit too... So while she definatly seems tired... she does have energy to muster if she wants to...

Check on her when you get home. I hope she is all wiggles when you do and that it was just a bug as DW hopes. Otherwise, if she isn't, take her to the vet in the am.
Let me know how she is when you get home. Sending her Lapitty kisses to get better soon.

DW just called after talking to the neighbor for our 3 oclock update... she said when she went into the apt, she ran out barking and wagging her tail... so hopefully it has passed and it was just a bug... to be safe, we will give her rice for dinner and breakfast....

See those La Pitty kisses work every time! [:D]
Glad she is doing better. Just monitor her throughout the night and note any changes in her behavior or health. You could add just a little hamburger meat, lean, into the rice. Like half of a chicken breast size or smaller to entice her to eat. Unless she eats plain rice as is. Or add just chicken broth slightly warmed into the rice. Small amount. Just enough to flavor the food.
Post how she is doing in the morning. please.

    Well I appreciate your concern...

Here is the update as of 9:49 pm...

I got home from work at around 5:30, and I walk in the door, and she runs out of the bedroom, and puts her paws on my hips (Normal) for me to pay her some attention... she is wagging her tail, and seems pretty happy.

After a throuroe (sp) inspection of the apartment I determine that she hasn't puked since early this morning (5 am).  I checked her gums, and they looked pretty pale, but she really isn't into drinking water... SO I had a brain storm.. I took her out and walked her down to the car was hose at my complex and let her play chase the water... (Her second fav pastime to swimming)

Anyway I let her do that for 15 mins and I try to make sure she doesn't have to poop... but she does, only it's mainly just liquid and what appears to be squishy spegetti strings...  The liquid looks like betadine.  I took her back upstairs and grabbed a pair of rubber gloves and go down to look at it.. after I brought a sample of one of the spegetti things back upstairs i check out the net for Worms.. and sure enough the Spegetti strings look like redish/yellowish  roundworms.

So Me and Lucy took a trip up to petsmart for some dewormer... After looking for a while I pick up a bottle of liquid wormer and head to the checkout, the checkout girl tells me about Evict DS and how it has ALWAYS worked on her dogs... SO I decide to get that, I come home and go to give her some... Do you remember how I said I was looking at another wormer.. well it's instructions were 1 TABLESPOON for each 10 pounds.. I left my glasses in the car and didn't realize the one I bought was 1 TEASPOON per 10 pounds... SO instead of giving lucy 6 teaspoons I wind up giving her 12... I realize my mistake, and FREAK out.. I call the Emergency vet.... I call the ASPCA Poision control line.. I pay the 45 bucks for that only to be told that She'll be ok.. My wife is freaking out cuz I spend 45 bucks to find out that the dog will be fine... Then I find the paper directions inside the box that says that essentialy it would take giving a dog 137 times the recommended dosage to do anything critical to the dog...

All I cna think of, is when I have a Kid in the next year or so, I am going to be one paraniod, schitzo father....

    Oh good grief!

Her gums being pale could be due to the worm infestation. Monitor that closely. Also make sure she is on a flea preventative medication like Advantix, advantage, frontline etc... To prevent reinfestation of worms. You can feed her just plain canned pumpkin to help with the tummy troubles. But be sure it is not the kind you use for pumpkin pie. Too spicy. She will have loose stools for the next few days after you have given her the wormer stuff, so don't be too surprised.
Don't worry, you will be a great dad cause you are attentative to your dog's needs, therefor you will be a great dad too.
Glad she is doing better and things are looking up for you both. Tell DW, 45 dollars is a small price to pay than 450.00 to find a dead dog or Emergency vet bill. I would have done the same thing. That is what that help line is for.

    Good Morning...

Ths morning she was all wags...

I forgot to mention that I did check her gums last night before bed and they were pink again..

She is on Advantage.. we took her off of it during the winter for a month or so until some of our neighbors' dogs picked up ticks...

ACTUALLY we normaly do feed her canned pumpkin (A WHOLE OTHER SITUATION ALL TOGETHER)  So... But I appreciate the concern...
