    Sick Bloodhound results

    I made a post earlier on are dog, who was having a lot of skin problems.  We had a biospsy done on his paws and we I got them on Friday, but my vet could not go into any details, becuase she had never seen a diagnosis like this before, so I went home and did my own researh, and found out that it is fatal, which made me very upset.  We are know having another vet look at all his blood test and the biopsy.  Has any ever heard of the following and information would be great.  In mentioned that the histological features are highly suggestive of 'superficial necrolytic dermatits' (SND).  Which is an uncommon skin disorder in dogs which is associated with severe hepatic deficiency, (hepatocutaneous syndrome) and
    (pancreatic glucagonomas).

    I just do not understand how a dog can get so sick so fast.  The only thing that came up really Low on his blood test was his Glucose which was 18 ,g/dl with the normal range being between 70-138 mg/dl.

    Please help, any one!

      I remember your other thread and he had been diagnosed as having a thyroid problem and was improving; I'm so sorry that things have changed. Do you have a veterinary teaching hospital nearby; they're a part of universities; for example I take Jessie to Purdue Small Animal Hospital for her allergies and it is part of Purdue University. They have cutting edge technology and may offer your best hope; people drive to the one I take Jessie to for several hours; there is a woman who's GSD was diagnosed with bladder cancer two years ago; she drives four hours to get there so her dog can be treated but he's doing great. Other than that I don't have any advice; please keep us posted on what the other vet says; I'll keep you in my thought and prayers.

    We also thought it was becuase of his thyroid be underactive, but we went a head and had the biopsy done, becuase she thought he had Lupus, she was 100% sure.  Well that came back and it was not Lupus but a severe hepatic deficiency as I mentioned above.  He is currently on a total of 20 pills a day, and is not wanting to eat, which I feel could be a side affect from all the medicine.  He wants people food but not his food and diet food for dogs.  He is also drinking lost of medicine which I also believe is from the medicine.  He is on thyroid medicine, Cephalexin, and prednisone, those are his main medicine.  I am so furstrated with are vet and feel like she like my checkbook better then the care of my dog!

    When a dog is seriously ill proper nourishment is crucial so let him have "people food" if he'll eat it.  Boil up some chicken or hamburger and mix it with some pureed veggies, sweet tater or a bit of rice.  If this needs to be long term, you'll need to add a calcium supplement.  But, people food is FINE for dogs, with some exceptions.  Mine eat it each and every nite.

     I know you're upset from learning that your dog has a very serious disease but I think the vet is doing the best she can. I did some searching and the best way to diagnose the condition is a biopsy of fresh lesions which is what your vet did. There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion and from your first post it seems you are doing that. You said you don't know how a dog can get so sick so fast; from what I read of this disease it progresses rapidly. Glenmar is right about table food; certain things like onions and chocolate are bad but many foods are fine for dogs. I assume that the" diet food for dogs" that you mention is a prescription food because of his liver and pancreas. This is a link to Monica Segal's website;

    She can work out a diet for your dog's condition that you cook yourself and she will also work with your veterinarian. Her fee is reasonable. I am so sorry that your sweet baby has such a serious condition; please keep us posted.
