The poops for 6 days now...

    Hi,

I am the loving owner of a 10 week old Lab/Coonhound.  He has had the poops for the last week(vet checked him out, says poop is bacteria free), and we think it is because of some liver treats we recently got for training.  They are Authority brand Liver treats.  They are about 3/4 of an inch around and are soft.  We get about 5 commands out of each treat and he generally gets about 5-10 day.

Does anyone think this could be causing poops in a puppy so young?  He started the poops last Sunday, right when we incorporated the treats.  We didnt give him any yesterday, but he still had the poops last night.  Maybe 2 days off them will get his tummy back in order?

Also, when I say poops, his poop is normal (but really soft) during the day and he only squats once(goes about 2 times a day), but at night, he needs to go out every 2 hours and squats multiple times, sometimes really soft poop comes out and sometimes nothing (maybe a little water)...

Sorry for being so graphic, as I am just concerned about my little man....

I posted this in the nutrition forum as well....

Any help on any of the above would be greatly appreciated.

Hi..That might be to many treats for his little tummy...I would stop giving them for a while maybe change to something else...liver treats give my dog the poops I bet if you stop giving them his poops will be back to normal...Cute puppy btw..I saw him on another thread

The same thing used to happen to Ollie the Great Dane when he was a pup,,,it was his food in general I think. He was on Iams (as the breeder told us to feed) and not until we switched him to better food did it stop. He now eats Eagle Pack!

Thanks Cazzy - he is cute!  (im biased).

dyan and Cazzy- Well, turns out we found worms in his poop yesterday.  I am very scared about this and Kobi has a vet appt. today at 11am.  Hopefully it is nothing serious.  I think thats why he only had poops at night, when is belly was empty.

Anyone with any experience with worms ease my fears?????

Luckily I have never had a dog with worms that I am aware of,,,but I do think it is the last of your worries...the vet will take care of it. All dogs have them from their mother,,,at least that is what they say.  Don't worry!

If you actually saw the worms then he's got a major worm load to expell.  Were they round worms?  Looked like spegetti?  This is easily treatable, but really *should* have been done before he came home.  Rounds are tough tho because they live in all dogs and are basically latent until something stressful causes them to activiate...pregnancy hormones, rehoming, etc.  Just get him to the vet and give him the meds the vet gives him and he'll be fine.  His poop will not be pleasant for a bit with all that live stuff squirming around, but he'll be fine.

I am going to agree with Glenda.  If it is worms, don't worry, the vet will clear it up.

My Tasha had hookworms when I brought her home even though the foster mom told me she'd been dewormed already.  The vet gave us some meds and cleared her right up.  She gets Interceptor now to keep the common ones at bay, but I don't know if your pup is too young yet.

    Thanks again for your replies...

I have not actually seen the worms, but my wife said they are "rice like".

We have only found them in one poop, but were not exactly looking for them.  I have been since the find (last night).

He is at the vet now, so hopefully they will give him the necessary treatment.

We took him to the vet when we first got him (3 weeks ago, he is 10 weeks now) and they gave him the interceptor pill then.  I guess that wasn't enough.

Another note, we had geese in our backyard 2 days last week and they left poop everywhere.  We cleaned it up (picked up poop, sprayed ground with tons of water where poop was), but maybe we didn't do a good enough job?  It was everywhere! Took us 2 hours to clean it all up so our little man wouldn't get sick (guess that didn't work)!

You mentioned that the treats you're using are soft.  Why don't you try breaking small pieces off? You might be able to use one whole treat in place of 4 or 5.
