    ticks disease

hi. my name is Cody Fuller. I have a 2 year old blonde collie/golden retriever named Keira that was diagnosed with tick disease or ticks disease today which is good news in a way because at first the vet thought it was leukemia and that she would have to be put to sleep. so i'm glad. he said she'll be fine, wiyll be put on meds tomorrow. Said we might have to have a blood transfusion. But stressed she should be okay.

    2 questions.

    1. How much would a blood tranfusion cost? just curious

    2. Anyone got any info no tick or ticks disease (whatever it's called lol)?  He said she will be okay like it wasn't deadly, the version she got but still says she may need a blood transfusion.

Thank You. It's good to join this forum. :)

    Hi Cody,
You know, I really don't know about ticks or tranfusions, but it does sound kind of expensive. I am sure someone will come along with some answers,,but I just wanted to say WELCOME and I'm also glad that she will be fine soon! Thank goodness!
Any pictures you want to share with us would be great!

Just made a big post and got 'kicked out' so I hope I can remember all I said first time =-(

Ask your vet WHICH tick disease your dog has.  There are several -- Rocky Mt. Spotted Fever, Lyme, Ehrlichea -- then you can search for it on Google.

My dog has ehrlichea right now -- that one DOES cause severe anemia.

Usually treated with doxycycline or tetracycline -- LONG periods of treatment (sometimes like 2 months).  Be sure you use a probiotic (like yogurt) and make SURE the dog eats when you give the antibiotic.  They can get quite sick to their stomach both from the disease and from the drugs.

MAJOR in giving this dog all you can to build the blood.  Supplement the diet with heart, liver (organ meat) and veggies high in iron:  spinach, swiss chard, beet greens and beet root.  Anything you can THINK of to boost the iron/blood.  It can really help.

ok. i know she has anemia but we aren't surre which kind of ticks disease he said. we're gonna call and ask him in a litle bit. I know they have some dog food at the store with liver and veggies, that might be good. she seems to have lots more energy with the meds now. pretty cool.

Welcome to idog; Callie (calliecritturs) was referring to fresh heart, liver, and green veggies that you get at the grocery store and cook; you can add these foods to the food you're feeding your dog now. Fresh cooked organ meat and veggies will do your dog a lot more good than feeding her a dry food that's supposed to have those ingredients. I'm so glad that your dog doesn't have leukemia and will be alright; keep us posted on how she does.
