    Canine Epilepsy - Accupuncturist Needed

My yellow lab suffers from canine epilepsy.  Does anyone know of a canine accupuncturist in the Harrisburg, PA area?

I'm sorry I don't know about an accupuncurist, but I have read that epilepsy is often caused by food allergies.  I read this article in the Whole Dog Journal.  It was written by a doctor who found excellent results when the dogs were taken off grains, especially wheat, barley, rice, and corn.  It has something to do with how sticky the grains are when water is added and the grains are mashed.  The stickier the harder to digest.    He highly recommended Natural Balance Potato and Duck, but there are other grainless foods too like Innova Evo, raw diets, and home cookin'.
I showed this article to a customer with a dog with epilepsy.  After feeding Natural Balance Potato and Duck for 1 month, the dog stopped having seizures.
We already know that food allergies can be a cause for epilepsy in humans.

You might try the Chi Institute website:  [linkhttp://www.chi-institute.com]http://www.chi-institute.com[/link] -- they have a good locator.  You might have to drive a ways -- towards Philly maybe or maybe even towards Pittsburgh.  For some reason their website seemed to be down tonight or I would have pulled it up for you.  First time I've ever caught it 'down'.

Accupuncture DOES work great on seizures.

In response to the request for more information about my dog, his name is Jordan and he is a 3 year old yellow lab.  I rescued him at 7 mos. of age.  He came from a puppy mill in Lancaster Co., PA and had deformed legs because he was kept in a crate that was too small.  Through proper nutrition and the use of a much beloved dog park, Jordan was able to overcome his orthopedic problems.  He walks and runs like a normal lab now.  He also suffers from allergies and epilepsy (most likely due from a poor gene pool).  He is a very good boy, who's job in life is to torment his older sister, a black lab named Bella.  Jordan has also recently become a certified therapy dog, so he has found his mission in life.  I would just like to get his seizures under control so help him live the best life possible given his rough start.  Thanks to all who responded with information and suggestions!

That locator is still not working today, so I emailed the Chi Institute FOR You and asked them to send me a list of PA vets -- I'm likely going to be talking to Dr. Xie next week (Billy's going up to Gainesville and will see at least Dr. Xie and I don't know how many other of the U of FL vets too) so if I can't do anything better I will get a paper list and mail it to you.  Dunno why that website isn't cooperating.  That's unusual.

If you would email me I'd be happy to pass your email on to Barbara.  My yahoo email is embedded or you can just email me at callie at critturs dot com -- leaving out the spaces and adding the appropriate punctuation.  Good luck!!!  I'm sure acupuncture is going to help you.

There are also topicals like White Flower Oil (another Oriental thing -- altho that's a blend of essential oils that act similar to Ben Gay altho much deeper penetrating and more pleasant).  It works GREAT on dogs.

Jordan is a beautiful dog, and he sounds like an absolutely wonderful boy. Regarding the grain free diet, look at [linkhttp://www.dogtorj.com/pages/556761/index.htm]http://www.dogtorj.com/pages/556761/index.htm[/link] andhttp://forum.dog.com/discus/messages/46/150777.html?1122325862 .

I follow Dogtor J's guidelines for my epileptic girl. I've seen amazing improvement, in the last year and a half. Emma has gone from seizuring (literally) constantly, and a constant post ictal state, to four episodes in a year and a half, two being very mild. Emma does not get any seizure meds, but she does get accupuncture, on occasion, and I use Rescue Remedy in stressful situations.

And do email Callie. She knows everything[;)][;)]

Hi -- I saw you hadn't checked in, in a few days, so I emailed you the list I got from the Chi Institute.  (and they reported that the locator isn't working right)

Hope that helps -- feel free to email me if I can help you.
