    spondylosis

Our dog O'shot'a was diagnosed with spondylosis 2 weeks ago and was put on prednisone . A few friends have suggested rimadyl for pain. She has trouble going outside and we assist her with a canvas firewood carrier, she will get up and get water though . She is a Rottweiler/Goldenretriever/Irishwolfhoung mix and weighs 100 plus pounds and is 13 1/2 years old . We hope we are doing the best for her, but will put her down if there is no hope . We have two other dogs too; Chelsea is a 5 year old Mcnab/Jack russel mix and Ursa is a 14 year old Mcnab/Germanshepherd mix with a plethora of health issues; Lymes disease. Lupus, deaf. blind in one eye, and Cusings disease which caused her coat to change from jet black to white in one season, but she keeps on ticking . O'shot'a has always been a big baby when it comes to any kind of pain . It really hurts to see her like this. She has an appetite , but seems to be very uncomfortable. I am going to try to post a picture, if it works , from left to right they are O'shot'a, Ursa and Chelsea .

O'Shot'a is absolutely beautiful big baby.

I use Yucca root, the actual root itself not only for myself but for my arthritic dogs. Boil it up like a tater, let it cool, pull the strings out and chunk it up for them. They love it as I do. Really helps with pain and is a natural anti inflamitory.
Another thing I have heard works, from a client of mine is this stuff called dog gone pain. Here is the link: [linkhttp://altmedangel.com/dogpain.htm]http://altmedangel.com/dogpain.htm[/link] And they swear by it. I also have seen their furkind come back from being unable to walk with out a hobble in her step and does seem to be a whole lot more pain free.
I am also going to order some of this stuff for myself to see if it does work then I will give it to my furkids who need it.
Hope this helped you out some.
Callie is the one to really talk to about this kind of stuff. Oh and acupuncture, is heaven sent!!!! Works wonders.

Hi - sorry I'm so behind here and just getting to this.

Please email me -- I have a whole article on arthritis I'll send you.  there ARE differences between arthritis and spondylosis.  But there ARE similarities.  Both have problems with inflammation.

I wouldn't go to the heavy-duty NSAIDs until you have no other option.  But white willow bark does a good job with far less negative side effects.

But combine that with valerian root or a similar relaxant.        When the body 'hurts' it gets tense.  Tension pulls those joints CLOSER, when they are already irritated and rubbing.  So relaxing the body is critical to relieving pain.

Let me know - I'm glad to help.

O'shot'a has been on remadyl for five days and friday she was able to get up and down the stairs on her own , it was so wonderful to see her up and about , she also is not panting constantly like she was on the prednisone . At the vets office on monday there was a dog sitting on a ladys lap that was 20 years old and still healthy and the publisher of our paper [ she lives in my neighborhood ] has a basset hound mix that has been on remadyl for eight years now , and it is 18 years old .

Thousands of dogs have died from using rimadyl, mostly of liver damage.  But om the other hand. there is no telling how many have had no problem with it and it has done wonders.  As for myself, it will be a last resort for my dogs becuase as my druggest, who looked up the ins and outs for me, said "That is some nasty stuff.".  But if nothing else works, the dog is in a terminal situation, then i would not hesitate to use it under those circumstances.  I wish you all the luck with your 3 "fur kids."

We helped O'shota to rainbow bridge today at noon in my partners subaru that O'shota loved riding in so much . Yesterday after she went out side she seemed to just want to go to bed and rest and needed help getting in . She had been doing well on the remadyl for a while , but this morning when we went to let the dogs out, she could not get up at all , even with help or to get water, she could barely crawl . We helped her to her bed and gave her a little water , the look that she gave us was to help her not go through this anymore , that she had given up all of her fight and was ready to go . We gave her a last ride and then brought her home . We made a nice casket for her with her blanket as the liner and her bowl filled with food and favorite treats and a bottle of water . I will dig a 5 - 6 feet deep grave for her tomorrow .

O'shota we all love you ( Martin, Louis, Ursa and Chelsea ) and we will miss you so much . 12/25/1992 to 06/24/2006

Bye, bye Popo , you were a very good girl , you were so brave , I'll see you at rainbow bridge baby, say hi to Morgan and Heidi and tell them we miss them too . Happy trails

This has been a very sad week for all of us . It took me 4 hours to dig O'shota's grave , I hit a local sand layer at 4 feet that dates to a psunami that hit here 700 years ago and found a 2 inch red rock and took that as a sign that I had dug deep enough . I planted golden eyed grass in the front of a raised bed over her grave , a meyers lemon in the middle and 20 carnations in a rainbow of colors to represent rainbow bridge . Today has been 1 week since we let her go , I collected an armful of roses and assorted flowers from my garden and placed them beside her bed . O'shota loved to smell the flowers . She loved small baby animals, frogs and bugs , she was a very gentle soul . We miss her so very much and I tell her that I love her everyday, several times a day , and that we miss her so much . We love you O'shota , we miss you everyday that goes by .

Your memorial to her is beautiful and I'm sure she is looking down with a smile on her face.  The pain and sadness will ease with time and will be replaced with the wonderful memories you have.  I hope you find peace and comfort in knowing that you gave her a wonderful life and a helping hand, when needed, to the bridge. .
