Something is wrong with Dakota!

    Something is wrong with Dakota!

She is acting like she has not eaten in days, she just scarfs her food down so fast, she almost chokes.

I did change her food, and I almost wonder if it was not giving her enough.  She has REALLY big poop too that is soft.
I bought the old food again, which I started to give her last night, but I am concerned something could be wrong!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi Julie,

Have you notice any other changes in her behavor other than she seems she cannot get enough to eat? Is she drinking in huge amounts of water??
You said you changed her food, is it possible she loves it and wants to eat it quickly before you take it away?

She is continuing the food thing even though I changed back.  I tried to move the bowl and she started to eat so fast, she was not even chewing, do not know what that is about.
Some runny poop again today, but one solid.
I have not noticed increased thirst but I am worried.  What could cause this?
Otherwise she is acting like a 7 month old puppy and is excited about life!!
    Playing and all.

Julie, My first concern was diabetes or some problem with the Thyroid. But, if she is acting ok in every other way, when was the last time she was wormed? Sometimes parasites like this can cause a dog to eat like there is no tomorrow but they also tend to drop weight. Then again, pregnant dogs do this too.  Another thought came to mind about her just being a gulper which is not nec a good thing as this can lead to Bloat which is not great  if not caught in time. Maybe try to feed her smaller amounts at a time in order to get her to eat at a slower pace. With you controlling the intervils. And the runny, not formed poops again could be she is not tollerating the food or maybe the change was too sudden.
Have you tried giving her just plain can pumpkin, not the pie kind, to help firm up the stool? And my last thought is could she have eaten something that just didn't agree with her?
Sorry, I am no help either. Am just as perplexed as you are.

Is the issue just that she's eating fast and large/soft stools?  Both of my dogs eat like they're starving.  They always have and it doesn't matter if they've eaten only hours ago.  So, that might not be a concern, other than the bloat issue.  Someone mentioned putting a large rock in the food dish so they have to move it around to eat the kibble.  Might be worth a try to slow things down.  As for the large/soft stools, what are you feeding her?  Is it possible she's actually getting too much food at each feeding.  My one lab will have soft stools if she overeats.  The pumpkin is definitely worth a try too.

It seems for now that the only problems we have is her eating like someone is taking her food, and DON'T touch her food dish cuz that makes it worse.  Then she has had LARGE stools.  I put her back on the food (Natures Variety) that she always did well on, but it has only been one day.  Today she had a normal stool and then this afternoon, huge stools that look grainy like there is undigested kibble in them so I don't know.

I am going to watch her REALLY close for other things and go from there.
    Any other ideas anyone?

This could be way off, but maybe she's going thru like a growth spurt and just eating more and it's a little to much for the GI system causing the stool issue.

I was going to say the samething willow. About the growth spurt.

Could it possibly be worms?? Just throwing that out there.
    • Gold Top Dog
Could be worms although she was dewormed not that long ago.  I am going to take a fecal sample in today or tomorrow and check that out.  If it is negative, I will watch her closely and then move forward

DH was telling me yesterday that she had gotten in trouble for "stealing" Toby's food, so we may have made  her food aggressive and now she is scared we are going to get her in trouble for eating hers????
    Could this be behavioural?

It's worth ruling out any other problems, but I'd say it could definitely be behavioral.  My one lab is so afraid that someone's going to take her food, that she gets manic about it.  I feed both of our dogs separately, and I mean they can't even see each other eating.  They've had aggression issues over food, treats, toys, etc., so I have to do this but I also think it helps them both relax a tiny bit and not worry about the other stealing from them.  Have you tried any of the techniques like hand-feeding a little at a time, so she knows you're there to give, not take the food?

I'm not sure if getting in trouble once would cause a dog to become food aggressive but I am not an animal behaviorist by any means.  I hope you find the root of this...good luck!
