Frontline Plus for ticks

    Frontline Plus for ticks

7 years ago, I encountered my first tick. It was big and ugly and since then, I have been extremely lucky not to encounter another one. Well, until last week...

Thu - Found 4 ticks on my sister's dog, 1 of them was partially engorged.
Fri - Bought Frontline Plus and treated all the dogs.
Sat - Did not find any obvious ticks on the dogs but I found one on my shirt at the vet after being there for over an hour.
Sun - Bathed all the dogs with a botanical flea/tick shampoo. (Frontline website says that the dog should be kept from getting wet until the application area is dry, which is approx. 24 hrs). I discovered a bump on my sister's dog (chest) but it was gone after I rinsed off the shampoo.
Mon - Found another tick on my sister's dog, again partially engorged.
Tue - Yet another tick on my sister's dog! [sm=banghead002.gif]
Wed - Bathed sister's dog again. Found a tiny insect, maybe a nymph?

The rest appear to be clear (crosses fingers) so I think the ticks hopped on her on Wed when she happily played on an outside patch of grass. Most of the ticks found on her were also quite small, except for the partially engorged ones that were about the size of a small pea.

I don't get it. Shouldn't the Frontline Plus have worked by now?! [sm=smack.gif]

    Any advice?

Hi Sakura, I have found Frontline Plus to be a waste of monies for my pocketbook any way. It does not work for my dogs in Fl. So, I resorted back to Advantage for the fleas, and a Preventic Collar for them also. However, the smaller dogs cannot have a Preventic Collar, so the get Advantix which does help with both of those pests.
I was told by a representative of Frontline about a month ago when I called to say not only was it not keeping the fleas off of the dogs but the ticks as well. The rep calmly said to me it was and I quote " Due to the Huricane Katrina issue in NO, these pests have nothing to feast on so they are migrating south to Florida and that is why I am having such trouble" There was a long pause then I busted out laughing at this idiot!
He advised me I could get a one time reimbursement for my troubles but would have to have a Veterinarians letter saying I purchased at least three months supply before they would even consider reimbursement to me. That my friend is REDICULOUS!
I said to the guy, I buy a six month supply, times four dogs. You do the math. It didn't even phase him.
My vet said there are a lot of people that have complained about this product not working as it should. You may fall into that catagory.
The rep did tell me that I had to wait THREE days before I applied the Frontline on my pets to take affect.
Needless to say I no longer use Frontline on my dogs and have submitted a hand written letter to the company advising of my experience with their representative and product. So far they have not responded to my letter which I sent signature upon receipt.

Frontline is not a force field that will keep ticks off, rather it kills them once they have attached to the dog.  It won't do anything to stop them from hopping onto the dog.  Checking daily for ticks is the best thing to do and also avoiding areas where there are lots of ticks this time of the year (long grass, leaves on the ground, wooded areas).  Do you have Lyme in your area?  Do you test your dogs for it?  Be careful about bathing your dog too much - it's not good for their skin and they need the natural oils in their coats in order for the Frontline to spread all over them.

i have also read/heard that you should wait three days after applying before giving them a bath. as agilebcs stated you may still find a tick crawling on your dog after applying frontline, but they should die before they attach if it is working correctly.

I have used Frontline and then Frontline Plus for years and this is the first year it has not worked like it should.  The last 2 times I have used it, I found fleas crawling on them within 2 1/2 weeks, and I mean seeing 6-7 crawling on bellies.  These goldens with their long fur and thick undercoat could hide 100's of them little nasty critters.  I complained about it to the tech at my vet and she said I needed to use the Capstar with it for a few months.

I think I I treat my dogs, my yard and my house then I should not be seeing fleas on my dogs in 2 1/2 weeks and I sure don't want to have to buy capstar AND Frontline.

do you think that frontline has changed their formula or something? we havent had a problem with it so far, but i know the ticks are really bad this year. i have already found one on me, and that was just from being in the backyard.

I don't know what the deal is, but everyone you talk to here is complaining about the amount of fleas this year.  I have to add that from Dec. 31 until last week, we had only had 3/4 inch of rain down here.  Normally the fields around here are head high in corn or knee high in cotton or maize by the end of may and this year they were just plowed feilds of dirt, nothing growing except a stray weed or two.  THEN last week we got 11.51 inches of rain in 8 hours!  It is to late for the farmers, but it has sure greened up our yards, flowers, etc.  Now I don't know it if is right or not, but I heard the flea situation is so bad due to the drought.

i know ppart of the problem here with insects in general (not just fleas and ticks) is that we only had about 2-3 days of actual winter. the rest of the winter was really mild. mild enough to wear shorts and t-shirts most of january and february.

I spend alot of money buying this every other month!!  [:@]   I would be really upset if Frontline plus doesn't do as it said it does.

Well, she's still scratching frantically but I don't see anything. The others still look clear. I'm going to take her to the vet tomorrow as she's scratched herself raw on one side. Since cleaning with chlorhexidine and antibacterial powder isn't doing much, she'll probably need a steroid shot. I'm wondering whether the broken skin may have attracted the ticks in the first place.

The distributer suggested that I treat the environment as well just in case. I can use the spray to kill any additional ticks before removing them.

I'm going to use food grade Diatomaceous Earth to treat the environment. I live in the tropics and it's currently the rainy season. Great, huh? Monday looks like a nice, sunny day to apply...

I always wait 2 days before or after a bathe to apply Frontline Plus.  I do believe that is what the insert in the box states.

Are you all using the correct vials for the weight of your dog??  I had ONE issue where I found a tick on her after using some for the weight range just below hers that I got as a gift.
