Lump on testicle? Update: Surgery complete!

Murphy was sleeping in his usual position (on his back) yesterday.  I noticed what looked like a lump in/next to his testicle. I felt around it and sure enough there is a lump there. [:o
Is this something common to beagle mixes or does he need to see the vet? I'm trying not to be paranoid, but it's second nature for me.

    Update:
I decided to have Murphy neutered. He needs to be fixed anyway, so they can examine the lump after the surgery and biopsy the whole thing if they wish. I am so nervous about the surgery! [sm=uhoh.gif]  If the lump turns out to be nothing after all, I won't have to worry about this ever again. This whole lump issue has been bothering me since I noticed it.
When I found out that he would have to spend the night after the surgery, I was really upset.
Murf came from a rescue and I just know he's going to think we abandoned him...... :(
Wednesday the 14th is the day of surgery..... positive thoughts for my baby please.

I would call the vet and ask about it.

An intact dog is at greater risk for testicular cancer (you can't have cancer in an organ you don't have, but an organ not used that still puts out testosterone is a ripe target for cancer).   Have the vet look at it please -- SOON.

New info added to first post.

Having it removed/neuter is the smartest thing to do.  Either way you'll know with the pathology.

A good update. Murf is back home. :)
He's doing really well. He was neutered, got his teeth cleaned, and was micro chipped. All for under $300. I'm so glad he's home!
Oh- and the lump I felt was normal testicle stuff, so he's ok.
