    need your opinion!

i brought my spayed five-year-old mix to the vet twice recently. one of her nipples was large, swollen, red and itchy and the hair around it was gone. the vet said it was probably an infection and gave her clavamox for treatment. it got smaller and the discharge was gone, but it is still big, swollen and itchy and the hair hasn't grown back in. the others are getting a bit bigger too. during my second visit, the vet said it could be hormonal or a tumor but since it got a bit smaller switched her to augmentin suspension.

my question: how can you tell if it's a tumor? and if anyone here has had their dog take either antibiotic, which one works better? i was thinking of asking my vet if my dog could just continue with the clavamox because i felt that the augmentin had such a high dosage (and it's for people anyway). what do you think?

side question: my dog also has flaky skin and the vet prescribed a shampoo with chlorhexidine, which is for antifungal treatment. i'm curious if anyone else has had their vet prescribe this kind of shampoo for flaky skin. thanks!

The only way that I know of is if they take a sample of the tissue to be sent to a lab. Augmentin, being stronger than Clavamox may knock out the infection faster.

Do you use any Omega Fatty acids in your dogs food? Salmon oil is good for dry flaky skin. I add a touch of flax seed to my dogs food which is rich in the omega fats. But too much can cause runny tummy's so use sparingly.

The vet prescribed this for my lab when she was having some skin problems too.  You can actually just mix it up with some water in a bottle and dab it on the affected area.

I'm not sure your girl has the same thing, but my lab (who has lots of allergy problems) gets dry, crusty patches around her nipples sometimes too.  Her's don't get as bad as your describing, but maybe it's something similar and is allergy related.
