Anyone have any ideas what this could have been?

Our baby CoaCoa, passed yesterday evening.  She was a 10 week old chihuahua.

Her condition change was sudden.  From healthy and happy to lethargic with a light hack in her breathing.  We spent yesterday in the vet with her.  Negative on parvo, distemper.  Her x-rays showed congestion in her lungs.  Took about 15 hours from onset to her death.

Vet theorized that it was some type of ingested toxic substance or something congenital.  It is driving us crazy as we have other animals.  We have looked all over the house and outside where she went to potty and the only things I can come up with are soaps/shampoos in my shower(where she liked to drink water drops) and there were some living mushrooms in the yard.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

first of all, welcome to I-dog and you have my condolences on the loss of CoaCoa. Candy and Sage are showing her the ropes up at the bridge.
I also do undestand your frustration on how and why it happened. (((((hugs)))))

Did she have shots recently? (as in the past couple of weeks)? Have you put any flea/tick medicine on her? that's the only things I can think of.

Thanks for the condolences and the suggestions doc.  No shots in the past two weeks for CoaCoa.  No frontline on her yet.  But our shepherd had recently had her monthly frontline application.  You reckon she might have licked it off our shepherd's neck?

I am very sorry for your loss.  That could be a possibility (licking the frontline).   Hmmm How long did you have Coa COA?  Did you change anything...food, cleaners you use in the house...anything different at all?  Think of anything different at all even the smallest thing could lead you somewhere.

We had CoaCoa for 4.5 weeks.

    **** NEW DISCOVERY*****

We just found a chewed up cigar behind the dresser.  Tobacco maybe?  Anyone know if tobacco could have done this.

Do a web search on toxic substances to dogs.
    • Gold Top Dog
Nicotine is toxic to dogs to ingest it.

Have you really had her since she was 5 and a half weeks old? That's very young to be taken away from momma.
Babies this small (and this young) also have problems regulating their blood sugar. I know at the kennel where I used to work, we had to give a 4 month old yorkie corn syrup twice a day because her blood sugar became dangerously low and the vet put her on it as a precaution.

5.5 weeks is right.  She had been weaned when her parents' owner brought her to us.  I looked at the cigar wrapper closer and it was a honey-flavored cigar, so she may have ingested some.

Also, we had put Karo syrup on her lips yesterday morning just in case.

Welcome to idog 24heel; I'm so sorry for your loss and hope you find an answer as to what caused her passing. You could have a necropsy done to determine why she died; I know state veterinary teaching hospitals do them. If it was nicotine from the cigar they should be able to find that in the blood. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

So sorry to hear about your baby. Did they run a tox screen to see if it was tobacco?

So sorry to hear about your baby. Did they run a tox screen to see if it was tobacco?

No, we just brought her home and give her a spot in the pet cemetary.  I am 90+% convinced that the
culprit was a Dutch Master honey flavored cigar.   I wonder if the proliferation of "sweet" cigars has
caused the death of other pets?

Kayro syrup is fine for dos as well as honey, I would think it was the niccotine (yikes sp) if anything.... she was very young and puppies immune systems or their ability to live through things is VERY low... so you had that against you from the start - she was such a vulnerable little baby.  Im sorry for your loss.
    • Gold Top Dog
Gee, I sure can't help or add any suggestions..luckily I have no knowledge of something like this. BUT I just needed to come here to give you my sympathy, it is so sad about your puppy and I'm so very sorry!

It also might have been hypoglycemia (sp)? We had a tiny teacup chihuahua come into our office with the same symptoms and that was the diagnosis. She had to be on IV fluids for a day and also forcefed some Nutrical.  I know that this is very common in little bitty dogs.
