Puppy seems to be heaving but not being sick

    Hi,

I'm new and I have a new(ish) puppy.  I have a five month old mini wire haired Daschund.  This afternoon after visiting my mum he's started to dry heave every couple of minutes.  At first I thought he was going to be sick but it hasn't gone away and he wasn't sick.  It doesn't seem to be effecting his behaviour (still being naughty).  I got him to eat and drink something in case there was something stuck in his throat but that doesn't seem to have made any difference.

I'm in the UK so the vet is closed already and doesn't open until tomorrow morning.  Does anyone have any idea whether its serious or whether it can wait until tomorrow?

    Many thanks

    Maria

Does it seem like a cough?  Or more like he is trying to bring something up that he just can't?    Has he been to your  mum's before?  If not maybe he is allergic to something there and its causing him to cough?  Even if he has been there before there may have been something new in her house.  Has he eaten anything different?  Does he seem to be having any trouble breathing?  He may have some sort of irritation in his throat.  My big dog got almost strangled by the bigger dog next door a while ago and he coughed sporadically for quite a while after that.  Keep an eye on him.  As long as it doesnt worsen, and his appetite, thirst, and attitude and enegy don't change, I think you can wait until tomorrow morning.

He has been to my mums before loads of times so I don't think its anything like that and she had his normal food there. It IS almost like he's trying to cough pathetically but not managing to so yes, almost like theres an irritation but sounds like he's swallowing it back.  He's finally asleep and he's stopped doing it but I will keep an eye on him. Poor baby.  Hopefully someone will be along soon with some useful advice.  I'm drawing a blank pathetically.

Is his cough more of a cacking noise that he does once or twice or does it seem like he's wheezing more and kind of hunched over?  If it is the 2nd, he may have a case of kennel cough or a collapsed trachea.  Either of those should be able to wait until tomorrow unless he's unable to stop.  Sometimes rubbing gently around his throat helps.  My dog had the same heaving and wheezing around 7-8 months and when I went into the vet, they were unsure of whether it was kennel cough or tracheal problems.  They sent us home with some meds though and since then it's rare that he'll do the same thing anymore.  If it seems like it's getting pretty bad though, I'm sure you may be able to call up an emergency clinic and ask for their opinion as well.
