Sentinel and frontline?

    Sentinel and frontline?

I give my puppy the Sentinel monthly heartworm prevention, and it says it helps control flea populations...do you think the use of Frontline Plus on top of that is too much? I have been doing both because he goes to the barn alot and there are ticks everywhere (so far he hasn't had any on him when I put the frontline on).  Just curious

Our pom used to be on sentinel and it did NOTHING for ticks and fleas.  So by july I couldn't stand it anymore and got him Frontline plus. A few days after I used frontline, the fleas and ticks literally disappeared.  The next year we switched to Heartgard and frontline, which seemed to me to be just as effective.  Then the vet told us about iverhart, which is a lot more economical, and we used that with frontline, which also seems to work very well.

Personally I would rather go with the cheapest heartworm and give them frontline plus on top of that.  It just seems to me to be a waste of money to buy sentinel, when the results are all the same.

I also found that instead of reapplying frontline once every month, I can do it once every 1 1/2 to 2 months.  They're just as tick-free as ever.

    Hello there :)

It is not particularly surprising that Sentinel does not work against ticks - as it is not meant to do so. It is the best available flea preventative. Living in NC, and if you want the best possible protection, you should use Sentinel plus K9 Advantix. The combined effect of those two will make sure that you will have no flea problem at all, while the K9 Adv should take care of the ticks. It will not be too much for the dog either, as the medications work in completely different ways.

If you would like more info or have any further in depth questions, just let me know. :)
