    nose color changed?

when i first got jake, 3 weeks ago, his nose was like a pale pink color.  i just noticed today that its turned darker, almost kind of brown.  does this mean anything?  also ive always heard a dry nose is a bad sign.  his nose is usually wet but ocassionally it is dry, then goes back to being wet again, is this ok?

Kaylas nose was always dry as is Baileys.  I dont think that means anything bad unless its a bad kind of dry like cracking and hot... not sure tho.  I know Ive seen some puppies with pink noses that have changed as they got older...  dunno, sorry not more help.

I would tend to think you're good for him!  Are you using stainless or ceramic dishes as opposed to plastic?  Usually the 'bad' sign is for the nose to lighten.  A darker nose is usually better!!  So without having any further clue, I'd say you were doing something right!

great:)  yeah i use ceramic bowls, i dont know what he was being fed from before but he really was not in a very healthy environment, he wasnt abused but not taken care of like the family pets, he was just a foster.  (though i think most foster homes take better care).   before he came to them though i believe he may have been mistreated by his owners.   i really like this color better, i never did like the color of his nose before hehe.

Plastic can 'bleach' the nose -- it's a chemical reaction many times.  But my guess is the fact you are feeding him better and taking better care of him is just beginning to show!! =-)

I also found out if the dog's nose turns pink, that there is a possible underlying problem like their immune system is comprimised.
I found this out from a dog who's nose was black and turned pink blotches. It was later found that this dog had kidney issues. Wild isn't it?

Betcha your pup just has snow nose which is pretty common in yellow labs and in breeds with similar coloring.

"Snow nose causes the nose to fade to brown in winter; normal color returns as summer approaches. Snow nose occurs mainly in white-coated breeds; the color change can become permanent in older dogs. It is not associated with disease."

"The most common cause of a fading nose is "snow nose," says Grant Nisson, D.V.M., a veterinarian in private practice in West River, Maryland. Vets aren't sure why, but many breeds of dogs will lose pigment from their noses during the cold months. (This rarely occurs in cats.) People once thought that snow nose was caused by bright sunlight reflecting off snow and bleaching the nose white -- or by a combination of cold and trauma, since dogs often use their noses as miniature snow shovels. Vets have found, however, that even dogs living in warm, southern climates may get snow nose, so weather doesn't appear to be a factor."

I have a yellow lab and his name is Jake too.[:D]  I have never heard of "snow nose" before. I will have to pay attention when fall and winter come to see if his nose changes color.  Geez, you guys just know so much around here![8|]  I am so glad I found this forum.

I have a Lab also ( Parker ) and when we got him at 7 weeks his nose was black.  I think I noticed when he was 1 yrs old that his nose had changed to the color Tan.  It still has the outline of Black though.

Jake is about 17 months old and his nose is like that.  Pink in the middle and a little darker around the outside.  Yes, I call him Jakey or Jakers. My husband calls him Puddin. LOL   Plus we have some other ones I won't put in print.[;)]

Riley has snow nose too ... and I was nervous when I saw his nose go from black to a pink color.  I took him to the vet [8|] .. first time with my own pup and I think in 1-year I went for everything under the sun .. and that's what the vet said - snow nose.  I have a few pics under Photos for Sharing and you will see his nose is coming right back to a black button.

My 11 year old red golden's nose has turned from totally black to mostly  rust color, and has stayed that way for a couple of years now.  Use to turn back black, but no more.  The girls, goldesn ages a little over 6 1/2 and  4 1/2 still have  solid black noses.

Same with my red golden, his nose changes and has a slight pink in the middle during the winter.
