    suddenly ill

    Hello,
last wendsday morning our cocker Larry acted just like any other day.He was full of energy  when outside he sniffed around and then later that morning he ate his food with lots of apetite. In the afternoon  only 5 - 6 hours later when my wife got back home he seemed to be tired.During his walk outside he didn't show much interest in anythong and got tired quickly and so my wife headed back home with Larry. When I get home from work Larry always waits by the door and jumps all over me.I picked him up that day and as soon as I wedged my hands underneath his armpits he twisted and gave me a very painful bark.I was completely shocked .I thougt he had to suffer some kind of injury.I asked my wife and she said he was all day home alone and there .I tried to examine his ribs, moved slowly his front legs and he didn't show any doscomfort.I didn't dare to lift him up though.Larry didn't saty around and went to another room to lay down.We knew something is wrong with him but didn't have a clue what it could be.All night he just remained laying on his side, never moved,he never touched his food and didn't drink drop of water. He truly looked like he is going to pass away. The next morning we drove him to the vet. They did some x rays, did the blood test and neevr found any abnormalities. The vet administered to Larry some pain killers and when we picked him up at the clinic in the afternoon he was bit dopy .Two days later and Larry is acting just like nothing ever happened.
I just wonder was was wrong with him. That sharp pain in his "armpits" is something I dodn't understand.I mentioned to the vet but the vet never commented anything about it even though he witnessed it himself when I carefuly picked Larry at the clinic  and Larry right away showed his pain.Do you have any explanation for this???
If you do,please let me know.Thanks. Gunther

I don`t know what kind of pain it could be but I would change the vet if he showed no interests in this or at least get the opinion of a second vet. Maybe it has something to with his hinges (? don`t know if it`s the right word for it) or some kind of arthritis? But when it`s so bad that he didn`t touch water or food I would ask another one.

What kind of pain meds did he get?

Yeah -- I'm with susa -- time for some x-rays at the VERY least, not just painkiller.  If it's joints he's going to have a hard time getting up and down -- and something bilateral (both sides) wouldn't necessarily be joints but could be spinal, or it could be internal.

Honestly?  Unless the vet was under serious restrictions from you about keeping cost down I'm amazed a couple of x-rays weren't taken.
