    unknown cause

    Hi all,

I'm at a complete loss here. Over the last year I have tried literally everything to try to stop my dog from randomly getting sick. For the last year and approx 3 months my dog has been getting sick (yellow vomit/ weird pooping). And this happens once or twice EVERY month since I got her. I was told it is not a family thing (i saw all health records, she is registered pure bred, and family history shows no signs of this). So I have tried everything from de-worming her, changing foods, limiting treats, and only feeding her lamb and rice with no fillers. I thought the food was working (switched about 2 weeks ago to strictly lamb and rice), but today she puked yellow again! I even gave her de-worming meds in hopes that was the culprit, but it doesn't appear to be the reason.

She acts fine though, and she still eats/ drinks. She even still plays with her toys. So I can't for the life of me figure out the cause.

I am concerned though for my poms health and my babies health. I am due to have a baby anyday now. I don't want my poms unknown illness to hurt my baby.

So please someone help me figure this out!!!   [sm=cry.gif]

First, what has the vet said?

The yellow is usually bile from the stomach being TOO empty.  I'd really suggest bagging some up and ASKING the vet for his/her opinion.  If there IS a problem, other than it being just bile, s/he will be able to test/culture or something and let you know what's going on.

Hi ferociousness and welcome to i-dog. glenmar's advice is excellent. You should have the vet examine the yellow vomit, which is most likely bile. There is no danger that your baby will catch any disease from your dog.

Hi Ferociousness. I agree with Glenda in taking a sample to have the vet examine it.

Other causes of sporadic vomiting off and on over a period of days or even weeks has nothing to do with meals, but if appetite is poor, and the dog has a haggard look and appears listless, suspect the liver or kidney disease, or an illness like chronic gastritis, stomach or duodenal ulcer, a heavy worm infestation or diabetes mellitus. In older dogs, suspect a gastric tumor. A vet check up is very much in order here. The quickest way to have it diagnosed is to have Gastroscopy with biopsy of the stomach wall for chronic gastritis.

Please keep us informed of what happens to your dog and I will keep your dog in my prayers for a quick recovery and diagnosis too.

I truely wish I could afford to take her to the vet (called the vet yesterday, and they said it would be $80 to bring her in, meds could be $100+). I know it can't be due to an empty stomach she has a constant supply of food, and easy access to it. She does drink and eat regularly. And she is very playful. Since I wrote this post she hasn't puked, but has had a little bit of diarreah. I am journeling her sickness in hopes that when I can afford to bring her to the vet clinic it will help them better. Thank you all for your advice I will try to get her to the vets as soon as I am able. But until then I will just keep track of her behavior, and make sure she is still eating and drinking regularly. Hopefully she will be better soon :D
