allergies disappearing?

    Glenda,

I *think* you meant 1/2 TBSP instead of teaspoon, right?

I'm not 100% positive since I use cal. citrate, so I'm not entirely postivie which is the right amount.

I'm curious, Glenda, have you ever counted the number of eggshells and came up with the number of tablespoons of powder?

I found a reference that said that 1 large eggshell has about 6 grams of calcium, but only about 36% is elemental calcium, so that really means that
1 eggshell would be about 2200 mg of calcium.

That's a suprising amount of calcium for one large eggshell!  IF this source is accurate, then I'm actually very suprised at the amount.

My Bichon was highly allergic to fleas.  I never found any but I knew there were some in the vicinity and it only takes one. I do hope you can solve her problems soon.  I did find a link that 'might' be helpful. Good luck!

Nope, I did mean tsp.  That's what I had read here on idog and the nutritionalist confirmed that amount.  Some meats ARE higher in phosperous but she told me that basically it balances out.

Hi everyone-- I think I saw the question on here as to why retesting needed to be done for allergies, although I apologize that I don't recall as I type this who asked it. My (non-scientific!) answer is that I don't believe retesting is common at all. In fact, the reason we 'went against the grain' and retested three times was:

    1. my vet first tried skin testing and it gave us no results
    2. then we tried blood testing and made appropriate diet switches based on the results
    3. all was fine, until about a year later when Holly began getting severe hot-spot flare-ups and constantly scratching, etc. We went in for a retest, wondering if she'd developed an allergy to anything in her food that she hadn't been allergic to previously. Our vet said this was possible, especially given her age.

Despite all that, given the widely varying results, I think we're going to give the elimination diet a try and see how that goes. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Thanks Drea ; Cindy and I were both wondring about the retesting. Did any other allergies show up in the blood test? Good luck with the elimination diet. I hope it helps Holly.

Thanks Jessie's Mom! Unfortunately, other allergies did show up... beef and rice being two which she was not previously allergic to. Chicken seems to be our staple these days, as it's the one meat source that both my little Bichons can have.

What I meant was, did any allergies other than food show up ; trees, weeds, grasses, etc.? Sorry to hear that you're so restricted in her protein choices.

Food allergies do not show up well with the skin or blood tests. Unreliable as far as I have heard from vets and derm. They do show pollen and dust allergy, etc. Sally
