    Concerned and confused..

I'm not sure if this is the proper place...but it seems to be a sort of illness. We have a dog, a puppy beagle mix that's about 5 months old. He seems to have had a constant erection for the past 2 or 3 days. He's walking oddly and licking it alot. I have no clue what it may be and figured I'd check here before calling a vet. Thank you.

Is the actual penis out?  If so you better rush him to the vet it is a serious problem.

we called the vet and they told us to separate him from the other dogs. they said one of them may be in heat. so we have in hopes that it will retract.

He's pretty young to be having a sexual reaction even if someone IS in heat.  A penis stuck in an erection is an emergency.  He needs to be SEEN by the vet immediately.

How is the pup, did you take him to the vets?

I'm curious how many other dogs do you have and are they spayed and neutered?

Don't take him to the vet who told you that.  He is an idiot.

My dog didn't have an erection but he was contantly licking his sheath.  Like ALL the time.  Turns out he had an infection in there.  We only found that out after taking him to the vet!  So you need to take him to the vet to find out no matter what.

Have you ever noticed in the commercials for one of the male erection drugs (celais maybe) that they SAY if an errection last for more than 4 hours to seek IMMEDIATE medical help?  That's because if it's errect for too long when they "deflate" it, it can cause a future failure to be able to ACHIEVE an errection.  While this might not be an issue for a dog, the DAMAGE caused can be.

And, I agree with Billy......the vet you spoke to is an idiot.

I always get a chuckle out of that passage in the commercial.  Beyond that, I will keep my 7th grade thoughts on the subject to myself.  [:)]
