ravenous appetite!

    ravenous appetite!

We got a sweet 2 year old, female rescue lab from TN.  She was found tied to a car, very thin and about ready to give birth!  We have had Bella for a month.  She came down with kennel cough (along with every dog in the neighborhood) but got over it quickly. Even though we are feeding her 5 cups/day of premo food (vet's direction) she has only gained a few pounds and her stools are sometimes loose.  She is frantically ravenous!  She was wormed before we adopted her and we wormed her again.  Girardia....worms that weren't knocked out with the regular dewormer???? Her coat looks good, her eyes are pretty clear (just a tad of gook), she gets lots of exercise and attention, her nose is dry, no fever last time we checked.  Any clues anyone?  It might be vet time again.

What is premo food? Which one?
Sometimes dogs don't do well on certain foods and if she is not gaining well and still has loose stools it may be time to change foods.

    JMHO!

She has Giardia?  If thats what shes got that is a parasite that will not go away with a dewormer.. you will need antibiotics for that, and they will make the stools loose, slimy, and cause vomiting.

This is just cut and pasted from a wesite about Giardia... and may have to do wih the appatite also...

*What are the signs of a Giardia infection?
Most infections with Giardia are asymptomatic. In the rare cases in which disease occurs, younger animals are usually affected, and the usual sign is diarrhea. The diarrhea may be acute, intermittent, or chronic. Usually the infected animals will not lose their appetite, but they may lose weight. The feces are often abnormal, being pale, having a bad odor, and appearing greasy. In the intestine, Giardia prevents proper absorption of nutrients, damages the delicate intestinal lining, and interferes with digestion.

You don't want to over feed her even though she is very thin if you over feed her more then what her tummy can take it will make her throw up. Her tummy is not ready for larg amount of food I would slowly increase the amount of food each day.  Also to help her eat her meal slowly I would buy a kong then fill her meal while adding like pumpkin, yogurt, or cream cheese. Or you can stuff the hole at the bottom with peanut butter then freeze it.

    Hi:
My one dog had come to us with giardia, (as well as other parasites). Anyhow, yes you need to get antibiotics for him and make sure you do get his stool checked again a couple weeks after the antibiotic is finished. Sooner, if you don't notice a change.  It can be difficult to get rid of, we needed a couple rounds of antibiotics to do it. Keep me posted. Good Luck!

Ok...if she had giardia you WOULD KNOW....that little voice would tell you along with the blood and smell and explosive diarrhea and so forth. Giardia is not a worm...can you clarify weather she has giradia or not?

If you have only had her for a month you will not see more than a few pounds difference right now. It takes 6-8 weeks to see a diet change when we are referring to weight. Anything quicker can be damaging to the dog. Keep doing what you are doing and if you are not seeing an major problems with her stool then don't freak yet. It will take time for her to gain weight and could take over a year for the "healthy appetite" to settle down or it could take a couple months. She comes from a traumatizing background where food was limited and this behaviour takes time to change.

As far as the vet recommending 5 cups a day....that is a lot to start but I don't have the label in front of me. Usually you would go from 2-3-4 etc. If you want to do something to help gain weight add in an oil to the food (olive, canola etc) but don't over oil or you will get diarrhea. A tablespoon to start. This is the quickest way you can gain weight in a dog is to add this to every mean (makes me wonder about my "healthy" cooking with olive oil). In 6-8 weeks if your dog is still not gaining weight that is when you should go to the vet or the pharmacy and pick up something like a whey protein to mix in. Ask the pharmacist and they will tell you what to add. You would be surprised how much they know about animals and what medications and things to add to their systems.
