    watery eyes

my new little chihuahua mix usually has a wet nose and watery eyes, is this normal?

Jessie's eyes used to water because of allergies. Dogs with pushed in faces like pugs can have watery eyes, but I don't know about chihuahuas. My vet said a wet nose is normal, but a dog can have nasal discharge from allergies too.

Alot of dogs suffer allergies at this time of year, it may be a pollen thing.

Or, it may be a food thing.  What are you feeding?  What you need to do is feed the simplest, least complex food you can get your hands on and see if it makes a difference in the tearing.  California Natural is a very simple food without too many ingredients.  The canned Lamb and Rice is very good for dogs with allergy problems.

When we adopted Odie, he had terribly runny eyes.  We had to wipe them 2-3 times a day.  I am sure the shelter fed him whatever they had handy at mealtime.  The vet said it was probably some kind of allergy.  Personally, I think "allergy" is vetspeak for "I don't have a clue."

Anyway, we put him on a quality food and the problem was solved.

Sorry Billy, but I disagree. It certainly doesn't hurt to upgrade to a better food or change to one with different ingredients than what the dog is being fed to see if that will help, but dogs really do have allergies to pollens like we do. [;)] A good diet definitely helps the immune system and may be enough for many dogs without anything further, but when a dog is seriously allergic like Jessie, a good derm vet is a blessing. I'm glad switching food worked for your dog.[:)]
Jaye, is it possible that your dog has a cold? If it's allergies your pup should also be itching; typical areas are the ears, face, "armpits" or where the front legs meet the body, and groin area.

well emma had quite a cold when we first got her, she sneezed a lot and blew snot all over everything, i had to wipe her nose once in a while like a little kid.  but she didnt have watery eyes.

now jake has watery eyes and he sneezes every now and then but i think its pretty much a normal kind of sneeze he doesnt really seem to have a cold.  i thought maybe watery eyes was a common thing with little bug-eyed dogs but from what you all are saying maybe he has mild seasonal allergies.  at this point, if it is allergies, i dont think it needs to be treated but ill see what the vet says about it when i take him in for a check up.

Maybe it is because his eyes bug out. That's what I meant when I said" dogs with pushed in faces like pugs". I think you should talk to other owners of chihuahuas and see if their's have the same problem.

I noticed the other day that the chi's next door had sort of watery eyes.  But this is the time of year of live oak pollen, bermuda grass and all kinds of things dogs are allergic to. I don't see much of the chis next door as they re only let out to do business and if I am not out front I don't see them.  But I thought the other day that the mama chi appeard to almost be crying.

Hello, my vet told me that chihuahua's eye's water cause of the way their eye's set in there head. Cause I asked the same question and thought our new chi puppy had allergies. She said just wipe them and keep them clean. She also said if he dug at his eye's like they were bothering him she could put tubes in so they would drain down the tubes. HTH! Hugs, Chrissy

I know that Shih Tzu have this problem which is cause by the way the hair grows into the eyes.
My Westie had water eyes as a puppy because of the way her hair was at the time...wild child puppy hairs that seem to be irratating her eyes.

My neighbor had to have surgery done on her Shih Tzu to correct the problem which is very common on the breed.

I wonder if its the way the hair is growing in around the eye area? Just a throwing out some ideas...

jake actually doesnt really have hair immediately surrounding his eyes, and where the hair starts it is very very short.
