    Weird hyperventalating episode

I hope someone can help me out with this:

My dog for the past few years, and lately more often then in the past, has a hyperventilating episode where at the same time a snorting/hacking cough sound comes out.  Has anyone else experienced this with their dog(s)?  Any clue what this could be?
    Thanks!!!

    Hi Emmi,
Do you have a small dog?

What is sounds like to me is a colapsed treachea. I have a dog that does something like this and if I can get to her quick enough and pinch her nostrils closed for about ten seconds, it seems to do the trick. However, if it does not stop quick. She then goes into full blown breathing difficulty and have to give her something like Hydroxizine or Benedryl to get her to relax.

This isn't something I'd trust to a dog forum diagnosis.  I'd be getting my dog to the vet, pronto.

Thanks forpaws!!  Yes she is a small dog, a Yorkie, Shi Tzu, Chiuhua mix. I did have an emergency vet clinic tell me it was the treachea collapsing, and that if it continued she would need to take something to calm her down, my old vet later agreed that was a possiblity.

I am taking her to the vet today, but the new vet I have brushes me off when I bring her in.  I don't like leaving her alone when this happens since they only way to get it to stop is to keep her calm.  But thank you for your experience it settle me knowing that this has happened to someone else and not in my head.

    You are very, very welcome.

It is scary, especially when one does not know what is going on with their dog.

Once I came home to find her in full swing of this episode and she was at that point not breathing or rather only inhaling and not exhaling. I tried the pinch the nose closed thing, not working, blew in her face to shock her out of it and it worked, then I gave her a mild sedative to calm her down and help her ease her breathing.
I totally understand about the freak thing.
Make the vet give you something for this. It also freaks the dog out too when it happens.
My heart goes out to you and your baby. Huggles your lil one for me please.

Both Candy (my bridge Tzu) and Daisy does/used to do this. On both the vet diagnosed it as a "reverse sneeze". Candy used to get it a whole lot more often than Daisy does now, and it was usually right after excersizing. Candy was a little overweight too, the vet said that could contribute to it.

Candy would spread her front feet apart, wrinkle her nose, and just hack/gag. I found that when I got her into my lap, and blew into her nostrils, she would come out of it a lot faster.
I do agree though that it is scary! Let us know what the vet says.

Yup- I thought reverse sneezing, too (all my dogs have done it at one time or another) but its probably something the vet should look into just in case.

I've never done the blow into nostrils thing, but I've heard it works.

Thank you everyone for your advice and concern.
I took her to the vet yesterday afternoon and they said that her chronic bronchitis has progressed a bit, and caused her bronchial tube to thin out a little and lose its elasticity.  Since the tube and trachea are now flabby because of the strain of the bronchitis she has problems breathing at times.  She also had a fever of 103.8, so she is on an antibiotic for the fever/infection and has a antihistamine for the bronchitis, and a pill to help with the coughing or breathing difficulty.

My baby is getting older .... but she is feeling better this morning after a few doses of medicine.

    Thank you all again!!!

Glad to hear the good news Maryellen. Yes, they do tend to grow older and quicker than we would like them too.

Nikki is 21yrs old and a Tzu also. So there is hope for your baby too. Lots of love and sweety tzu kisses.
