    Anyone have info on Lymphangiectasia?

Our friends have a 3-year old Basset Hound who's struggled with what they thought was Irritable Bowel Syndrome for most of her life.  Lots of bouts of diarrhea, minimal improvements despite all kinds of vet treatments, diet changes, etc.  About a month ago, they took her to a specialist who did more extensive testing than the regular vets they'd seen.  She'd really taken a turn for the worse - weight loss and dehydration so severe, they thought she wouldn't make it.  The tests (which included a scoping procedure and biopsy of intestinal tissues) resulted in the diagnosis of Lymphagiectasia

We're so sad to have just heard this news.  She's a big sweetheart, and was one of Tonka's favorite "girlfriends."  They were always so happy to see each other when he was alive.  Our friends have been told the condition is progressive - that it basically keeps protein from being processed by the body, and so she'll continue to weaken due to malnutrition I guess.  They said she'd likely not survive another 6 months.  For now, she's on a steroid treatment and another medicine I can't recall.

I'd never heard of this condition, and neither had my friends.  They've done some internet research to educate themselves, and I thought I'd add a post here.  Has anyone heard of this?  I think it's something people can get too, kind of like Crohn's Disease.  It seems like there would be something they could do related to food, supplements, something.  The reading I did said to avoid fatty diets.  If anyone has any info or experience with this, I'd appreciate it.  Thank you very much in advance.  My heart is breaking for my friends and sweet little Zoie.

I  have never heard of this, but I just have to wish your friends the best of luck with their little girl.  This is so sad.  My brother & family has a bassie that just had a HUGE pancke shaped tumor removed from her leg.  It was benign, thank goodness.  Belle is doing great.  I sure hope someone can help your friends to keep their girl longer.

I know you didn't come here for sympathy for your friend, you came for information.   Of course I don't have any either, but I also wanted to say that it is so sad, and how nice of you to help them.   I hope it ends up better than its looking now.

Thanks for your replies.  I appreciate the expressions of sympathy as well as the links.  Both are valuable.  I'll check back later tonight to see if anyone else has any ideas.  I'll definitely share the links with my friends.  From those links, as well as a couple other sites I found on-line, it seems like it's somewhat manageable - not an immediate death sentence.  Perhaps it depends on how advanced the case is.

I really understand what my friends are going through -- they're watching Zoie have very uncomfortable days, lots of sleepless nights if she has accidents due to urgency with bowel/bladder, lots of extra vigilance, washing/bathing, anxious meal and walk times, etc.  We lived with that for the last couple months of Tonka's life (except for the accidents).  Besides the absolute physical exhaustion you experience as a devoted caretaker, the mental and emotional anguish nearly finishes you.  It'd be one thing to go through all that knowing the dog will eventually recover, but knowing what the end will be, it's like a heartbreak that grows each day.  I'm still struggling to recover physically and emotionally from our horrible winter.

Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted.

Tracy - you might have them join this group.  It's moderated by Monica Segal who works with folks whose dogs have medical conditions and need special diets. [linkhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/K9Kitchen/]http://groups.yahoo.com/group/K9Kitchen/[/link]
