Found a little relief with this product for itching

    Hey guys...

You know Im always hunting for the perfect WHATEVER to help Alley with her itching.
I ran onto a new product that "Tropiclean" came out with. You can find all their products at Petco and IM sure other places as well. They make many shampoo's and conditioners...

Anyway this one is called Oxy-Med with a big red cross on the bottle. Its for itching and hotspots etc.
Now this is the conditioner so you can use whatever shampoo it is you like. They did come out with an oatmeal one with Oxy-med in it too. But I used my shampoo that I always  use on Alley and then left the Oxy-med on for 3-5 min's. I can't stress enough to leave shampoo products and conditioners on the dog for the length of time the bottle says. The other night I rushed through to quickly and didn't notice much difference with the conditioner but yesterday I took my time left it on and Alley hasn't itched since.

Bathing has been the ticket around here for giving some relief but this is the longest relief she has gotten so far. And I can say she has no pred in her system or Bendryl.

Just wanted to share... and for those who have big dogs and bathing .... UGH ... what a chore...LOL I was reading one of the other post and I bet it takes alot of product for big dogs... Cause I slathered this condtioner on thick....and really rubbed it into her skin....

Okay just wanted to share what I found....

Hey thanks! I will definately give it a try. I'm open to any suggestions that might help with Jetta's itchy skin...[8|]

Yes Kim, thanks for the recommendation.  I totally agree about the leaving it on long enough too.  It's not easy asking your dog to just "hang out" while the product works, but I figure if I'm going to put her thru the hassle, I'm going to make it worthwhile.  I try to make a massage fest and  I think she enjoys that part.
For Sassy, it does take a lot of shampoo to get the job done, and the worst part is that some of the medicated types don't lather up at all.  I find that if I pre-dilute the shampoo a little I can get it to cover all the areas better and it lasts longer.
As always, it's great to hear a personal recommendation.  We have had great luck with Nu Sal T, but I've never been able to find anywhere local to buy it, so I have to order it online.

    Hey Cath

The Nu Sal T do you have a link for it.... Im curious by this shampoo too...

And yes I turn it into a massage session for Alley...she loves it.... I agree if your going to go to all the trouble then take the time to leave the product on long enough to work.
So far still good. Im almost afraid to speak of it... cause the bath was Saturday am and its Sunday evening and all is good and I haven't given her anything oral for itching and she has even been outside....

    Weird I know....

I don't think IM going to the holistic vet for awhile....Im kinda up in the air as to what I want to do right now. Seems I do fine trying to manage her by keeping her bathed often. That seems to do more good than anything else.

I know she said the acupunture is 30 percent effective and we were working on cooling the skin which seems good right now. But as we all know tomorrow can be a completely different story with the itches and Alley.

Here's a description of the shampoo and you can get it from several online sources.  Not sure how I stumbled on it, but it's worked better than anything so far.  It works better than the Ketachlor prescription shampoo the vet gave us too.
I know what you mean about taking things one day at a time.  Sassy seems pretty stable right now, but I was filing yesterday and came across all the vet visit receipts just from Jan., and it was scary to think how much that all cost.  Sadly, I'm not sure any of the antibiotics did a thing to clear the infection up, but I trust that the vets were doing everything they could.  She seems to be doing pretty darn good right now but she is generally itching a lot.
Oh - and once I finish up what's cooked up and frozen, I'm done with elimination diet.  Whew - glad I gave it a shot, but very glad it's over.  I don't think home-cooking would be bad at all, but only have those 2 things was a hassle.  Many times I thought "oh my gosh, I'm out of buckwheat.  We need to get to the health food store today".  [:D]

Okay I need to look around.... I think I have that shampoo..

I was cleaning out cabinets today and was throwing away TONS of stuff I tried... Made me sick... the money Iv spent... I ordered alot of the stuff that is on the Great Dane site... Oxy drops... Nymes....probotics....non that worked I might add... MSM has sulfur in it and Alley is allergic to sulfur...

Okay now Cathy fill me in... You said your done with the elimination diet. Sooooooooooooooooooooooo your doing what now?

The reason Im doing the home cooking is to get her away from processed kibble but she LOVES kibble.... she goes crazy to get some of the other dogs...  Im out of Rabbit...cooked my last one today....

Im not sure what IM going to do food wise with Alley...probably got back to the Natural Balance Duck and Potato that the dogs are eating with homecooked on top. She loves it and I never saw a great deal of difference when she was not eating it....
    • Gold Top Dog
Kim - the Natural Balance Duck and Potato is exactly what I had Sassy on before all this too.  She was doing really well on it and loved it!!  I've already got another bag and ready to be done with the pork & buckwheat.  Our other dog, Buffy, hasn't had to deal with this and I know Sassy has missed the kibble.  Sure she loved the pork but never seemed as satisfied as with the kibble.  I definitely plan to add homecooking into the food but it's nice to be able to use both.

I know what you mean about all the products you've tried with no success.  When your're desperate, those labels can seem pretty enticing.

Kim,  I'm so glad that you found something that helps Alley; I hope it continues to work for her. It is a job bathing big dogs and I admire Cathy for bathing Sassy so often. By the way, when I stop shampooing Jessie and wait for the three minutes before rinsing her, that's when she figures we're done and hops out of the tub. I'm glad that Alley and Sassy are doing better. You two are such good mommies to your furbabies. I didn't try the Oxy drops, but I tried the Nzymes, tablets made from herbs called Skin-Eze, MSM tablets, Biotin, Brewer's Yeast, etc., and none of it helped Jessie either.
Jettasmomma,  I hope that the product that Kim found helps Jetta too. Good luck.

I LOVE the Oxy-Med. I also have the Oxy-Med Itch Relief spray (it has a blue cross on it). Works great on new hot spots to stop them from growing in to a huge hotspot. I also use it whenever Tyler starts to itch before it is time for his next bath. I LOVE this stuff, and it isn't too bad price wise. I picked it up late at night when the store was closing, just because I was desperate to try and get him thru the weekend during the episode from he**.

I also have wonderful success with a shampoo called Malaseb, made by DermCare. It is the only thing that works for him. I swear by it. I get from [linkhttp://www.canadavet.com]www.canadavet.com[/link] It cost me around 10-15 bucks for a small (8 oz) bottle, but a little goes a long way. It isn't a sudsy shampoo either. I put it in another bottle, mixed half and half with water, to help get him soaked.

Bathing a big long haired dog is such a pain! I don't have to use any conditioner on him anymore, but I will sometimes fall back to the Oxy-Med conditioner when spring and fall roll around (the height of his itchy season), just to be safe.

I didn't know Tropiclean made a Oxy-med spray? Is it buy the shampoo's or in another area? I will have to look cause Im going back for more conditioner today.

    Cathy
Alley never seems satisfied on the cooked diet either... its like she misses the kibble ALOT and she never seems satisfied either...maybe its that full feeling they get from Kibble...
Iv been eating completely different myself and I miss that full feeling too!! LOL Im doing 5 small meals a day and its been a positive change but different.

Jetta's Mom...keep me posted as to how the Oxy-med works for you.
    • Gold Top Dog
at the stores where I get it (Care-A-Lot and Pet Supplies Plus) it is near the shampoos, but further down the row near the other sprays for boo boo, hotspots, etc. I think Petsmart also carries it. Cost around 5-8 bucks if I recall correctly.

I am glad I don't have too much trouble, kibble wise. Finally found one that is working (at least for the last 18+ months). I don't think I could ever go totally RAW, as I am too lazy to fix our own supper sometimes! Although, I used to buy chickens and rice like it was going out of style for my old dog (had to have it due to her health). Do you know how long it takes my family to go thru a 40lbs bag of rice (after dog passed to the bridge) - forever and a day!!!

    Tylers Mom

Ugh I don't do raw.... UGH UGH...did that 3 years ago for 2 years straight... I guess I was having an insane moment but the Rescue people I did Rescue with brainwashed me good...LOL

I will look for that spray...I will go today or tomorrow.

As for the rice.... I don't know if you have a resturant in your area called Chipolte? Everything they fix is like eating an entire Rice Paddy in China...LOL You could have made a deal with them!! LOL

OT but there is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding raw, one need'nt be brainwashed to feed raw.  Many here feed raw for varying reasons and do so quite successfully.
    • Gold Top Dog
I respect those who feed raw. I wasn't saying it was a bad thing and I don't think any of us meant it that way. Email can read funny sometimes. Sorry if anyone took offense. I'm just glad I don't feel the need to do it right now. We did it for 2 years with my old dog. I would do just about anything if it helped my pup, but I admit I hate to be in the kitchen for more much more than pouring my coffee [:D]

I hope the spray helps, as well as the shampoo and rinses. Having an itching, licking, hot spot encrusted dog is miserable for all involved - humans and four footers. I feel so horrible for him. Not to mention the looks people give you when they see it. I think I lived with permanently marinated hands full of Bitter Apple or Fooey spray for 6 months.

BTW: That Fooey stuff is awesome - but wear gloves because brushing your teeth with "Fooey fingers" is no fun (been there, done that, got the Tshirt). It (taste) does not come off for a looong time !

sort of OT- last year when Tyler went thru the worst episode of hotspots I have ever seen (vet even said it was her worst case)... my boy figured out how to by-pass the Eliz collar, the bite not collar, etc. We finally cut a hole in a pair of my husbands briefs and he walked around wearing Tidy Whiteys. You should have seen it - hysterical. It was the only thing that slowed him down from getting at it.

My office used to ask me the "color of the day", as he had several pair (the only package I found in a smaller waist size was 4 different colors). Kept up office morale to this day. All it takes is an email announcing the new color of the day to put a smile on everyones face during a stressful week... Regret I never got a photo, but DH would not allow it ('your not going to embarress my boy', etc)

Okay Alley was itchy today so I did the bath routine again with my Shampoo I use on her and then the Oxy-med.... she hasn't itched since her bath.

Im trying not to get to excited but this is great......Oxy-med seems to be helping alot.

My Holistic vet called and left a message checking in and has a couple other idea's in helping Alley and was checking to see how she is doing since its been 1 month since we have seen her.... so I will call her tomorrow.

Anyway I just wanted to give another product update cause IM having such great luck so far with this.

As for the  Raw feeding comment. That was my situation at the time and Im not going to get into any decussions on that subject or any other strong feeding subjects cause they turn ugly and nasty. Again that was how my situation was at the time cause of Alleys skin issues and the ladies I worked with felt beyond the word strongly in me feeding this way. What others do is there business and Im not going to talk about how others are feeding there dogs... what ever works for you and your dog then more power to ya.... and lets leave it at that...
