Please help. Older dog with high calcium

My beloved dog who is 14 has had excessive thirst and hunger lately.  He was found to have high calcium levels.    The vet said it may possibly be due to a parathyroid tumor or lymphoma.    He is an active and happy guy.    Anyone have experience with this?  If it is a benign parathyroid tumor, would it be worth having surgery at his age?   If he did have surgery I am concerned with the dangers of low calcium levels also.  Please- any insight would be much appreciated.  I realize that I don't have all the facts yet concerning my beloved furry friend but would still like to hear anyone's past experiences.  Thank you so much.

Last November my dog Bailey (10 years old) started drinking extra water. There were no other symptoms--she was as spoiled rotten as ever. My vet did a blood test and discovered high levels of calcium. After we ruled out the simple stuff, she sent me to a specialist. We found that Bailey had cancer in her left anal gland and 2 of her lymph nodes. Surgery removed the tumors. We chose not to do chemo or radiation--did not want to put her through the trauma. She has now been 5 months without any symptoms or sign of the cancer (we check every 4 weeks). I'm not saying that this is what's wrong with your dog, but excessive thirst is a symptom for this kind of cancer. Best of luck to you--I hope it turns out to be something that's really simple to correct.
