    Hi Dreamer, welcome to idog.

There are many kinds of anemia, so I'm afraid you're going to have to be more specific as to the TYPE of anemia and what meds the vet has given your baby.

The 2 kind of medicines are Sclcrate Plus and Azathioprine

OK, that doesn't help.  I've not had this problem myself, so I'll forward this thread to Callie, who has had every kind of problem under the sun and have HER help you.

I wish that I could help you right now, but I don't have the knowledge to do more than guess.  Callie should know and I've forwarded this thread to her, so as soon as she gets online, she'll be along.

    I absolutely adore cockers...........

Yipe Glenda, I didn't get your email!! I'm glad I happened to see this!

In honesty, the only alternative would be to use a vet  who does traditional Chinese veterinary medicine -- I would think they would be able to give a blood tonic that would help and would also be able to tell you what to do to help it diet-wise.

They have a locator that will find someone close to you.  I've found it to be an excellent source.  The Chinese (and this doesn't mean the vet is Chinese but rather that the vet has studied oriental medicine) see the blood as sort of the pathway to health -- and something to tonify the blood is often super helpful.

They won't run a ton more tests -- typically your first visit is going to cost about $120 BUT the vet will be with the dog & you an hour or so (not five minutes) -- and that will also include treatment with acupuncture or whatever the vet thinks is important.  It's a whole different type of exam -- and should help.

Do take all your vet records and the tests to this new vet -- get copies from your vet or tell them to fax them to the other vet.  I'm not telling you to leave your vet permanently or anything -- JUST to get a second consult on this.  The dog may have to be seen a few times for treatment, but altho there may be some herbs to take (not American herbs -- but Chinese herbs which are pretty strong and effective medicine).  They aren't usually expensive -- the ones my dogs get I buy online.  Just don't try to diagnose this yourself -- but get the right kind of help here, and it should be far less scarey.

I assume the vet ruled out any sort of internal bleeding.  Any ideas on what may have caused this??

This gets you to the list of 'out of USA' practitoners:

There are four in Ontario (Peterboro, Oakville, Niagara Falls, and Toronto).  Good luck!!

Azathioprine isn't in my Pill Book, but you might find a VET PDR at the library.  The other one"Sclcrate" -- are you sure that is spelled correctly?

You can always do a net search on them -- I suspect  the dose isn't right -- typically stuff that boosts the blood can make a dog hyper because it probably ups the iron ... and you don't want to toxify the body with that.

Azathioprine is an immunosuppressant. I suspect the other medication is Sucralfate, but can't be sure. Azathioprine would be used for immune mediated hemolytic anemia. This is a condition in which the body's own immune system begins to attack and destroy its own red blood cells. This is a very dangerous, quickly progressive and potentially deadly type anemia. By all means get a second opinion if you wish, but do not take your dog off the medications without consulting with a vet first.

I am sorry you are having to go through this. My best to you and your dog.

do you know what's the side effect of taking Azathioprine..? because my dog seems to be very hyper.. extremely hyper at night!! and seems to be very very hungry all the time! my dog even cry for food.. but the vet asked us not to give extra food to my dog..
    • Puppy
Hyperactivity is not a recognizd side effect of Azathioprine, however, different animals may react differently to drugs/medications. Is the other medication sucralfate, or something else? Is it spelled on the bottle the way you posted it? If so, double check with your vet as to what the medication is and why it is being used. Often, corticosteroids like Prednisone are used in cases of IMHA and may indeed cause increased hunger and hyperactivity.

I think your best route here will be to arm yourself with all the knowledge and understanding of your dog's condition that you can. Do a lot of research (but don't believe everything you read online!) so that you can make good decisions for your dog.
