    sick puppy

I have had my puppy for almost 2 weeks. When we aquired him (at 8 weeks old) he was skinny, dehydrated, anaemic, and pot bellied.
After only 3 days of simply feeding him up he gained 300g. (When he arrived he weighed just 1.5kg - he's supposed to be a labrador).
When I took him to the vets for his first jabs etc, the vet thought the distended abdomen was due to a heavy worm infestation. So he dewormed, deflead, and vaccinated him.
It's been 8 days since then. He's gained 1kg in total. He's not produced any worm evidence in his faeces. He poos regualrly, solid faeces. He has a good apetite and gets livelier each day. Although, he does still sleep far more than my other dog when she was his age.
Unfortunately, the last 2 nights he has vomited. It's the same time about 4am. He vomits only white foamy thick saliva. There is no food, and occaisionally yellowish bile.
His stomach is larger than ever and you can see the rippling of his bowels. What could be wrong with him??

I forgot to say -  I feed him (as Ok'd by vet) 1 tin pedigree chum puppy food in little and often amounts through out day. (about every 2 hours). His last meal is at about 11pm and his first about 8am

The vomiting sounds like bile from a too empty tummy.  Pedigree really isn't a very good food....vets aren''t real educated on nutrition unless they specialized in that area.  As far as the belly goes, I'm thinking that the vet gave you something to deworm him that doesn't address all the worms....I'd take in another stool sample.

    Thank you for your reply.

I just called the vets; they advised me that his given Milbemax which (after searching on the net) appears to be a new, but broad spectrum wormer.

I have been looking at the diferent brands of dog food and I am at a loss as to which one is best.
My older dog eats purina pro plan; which although suits her, it does contain yeast, calcium carbonate and maize starch which I just don't think are that good for dogs.
What food would you reccomend for them to eat?

    Your advice is greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum!
As Glenda stated, Pedigree is not the best food out the for a growing puppy, especially one who has already had a rough start to life.

I would suggest you go to a premium food such as Solid Gold, Natura, Nutro, Natures Variety etc. These can be found online or at stores who sell dog food(not the grocery)

The belly could be once again filled with worms, worming should be done 5-7 days after the first time as sometimes the wormer doesn't take care of the eggs and depending on how well you've been cleaning up after your pup he might have re-infested himself. Depending on the type of worms, the vomitting could be from worms.
I would do another stool sample to the vet, ask what type of worms were treated previously.

The energy levels will come as your pup gets healthier

    Congrats on your new puppy!!

Gosh, what's available there?  I personally feed Innova and homecooked along with raw a couple times a week.  But without knowing what you can get in super premiums there, it's hard to suggest anything.  Here's a site to get a real eye opening education on dog foods....

Oh, and about the worms, Jaime is absolutely right AND sometimes a broad spectrum wormer doesnt do the job...sometimes you need something for a specific worm.  And, you don't ALWAYS see the worms when they make their exit.

Thank you very much for the replies everyone.

He's perked up a bit this afternoon and just after we got in from playing in the sunshine. He did a poo and there was an offending article in it. Eurika - I really hope this was all that was causing the probs.

He must have carried it with him since we got him as I really don't recognise, what it is  and I really have puppy proofed the whole house, - it looks like grout or putty but a lot of it in a large shaped peice(?!)

He's due back at the vets on Tuesday for his second injection, and we'll get another wormer then, hopefully that should see to that (And I'll continue every fortnight etc).

I had made a provisional appointment at the vets for tomorrow but I'll see if he's sick tonight - fingers crossed.

Thank you glenmar for that website link; it's just what I was looking for I'm going to have a good read just now.

I'll let you know how he goes.

Thank you very much for your replies.

Just be careful with the worms and clean up the stools each time or at least daily so he isn't getting re-infected by eggs and larve.

Worms can depleat a pup very quickly. Whips and tapes and hook worms are the worst, common worms wouold be round and you'd know then as they look like spighetti
