Jessies_mom, huh?? Panacur and Safe-Guard have the same active ingredient

My mistake; I've been short on sleep the last few days and I misread your post as recommending Panacur and Safe-Guard. Being unfamiliar with Safe-Guard, I assumed it was a different type of wormer.

Giardia was not detected to begin with, so what is the point of another stool check?  Giardia can be hard to detect.

       From one of your links;
Direct microscopic inspection of feces is necessary to determine the presence of the protozoan. Examination of soft feces may reveal the active trophozoites, and cysts may be found in firm excrement. The number of cysts can vary from day to day, so best chances of detecting this form of Giardia lies in collecting samples over three days for a fecal flotation test or conducting individual tests every two or three days until at least three tests have been done. A quicker test does exist, but it is more expensive and requires an experienced technician to run.

My vet examined Jessie's stool to look for the cause of her diarrhea; the OP said his vet did blood tests but didn't mention checking stools. I was going by experience. I brought in a stool sample (it's not easy with diarrhea) and he saw the cysts upon microscopic examination. He had me use Panacur and Miconidizole(sp?), then he checked her stool about 10 days later to make sure it was gone. If he had seen cysts again or if she was still having loose stools, he would have prescribed Panacur again but at a different dosage. It can take several stool checks to detect Giardia.

What is probiotics? And where would I find them?

       Yogurt is a good source; it has acidophilus, which helps digestion.

Antibiotics can cause severe digestive tract problems (bacteria or yeast overgrowths). Probiotics (good digestive tract bacteria) will help prevent this. Depending on the antibiotic the probiotic may need to be dairy-free (if given concurrently with the antibiotic).

Probiotics are like the "National Guard" of the digestive tract. They help with digestion and hold off the "looters" (bad overgrowths of bacteria and yeast) until the proper colony bacteria (killed by antibiotics) can reestablish their colonies.  Probiotics are killed, too, so one needs to keep flooding the system with them during the antibiotic period and for at least a while afterward.

Some of the probiotics with lots of bacteria:

Yogurt has probiotics but not high numbers.

Note that people also need probiotics when dealing with antibiotics - just not the canine strains.  [;)]

Jessies_mom, you're right.  I just assumed that the OP really meant that the stool had been checked, because the dog was "negative for Parvo and Girardia" and I know of no "blood test" for Giardia.

        The vet may have checked the stool but it's often necessary to check it multiple times. There's always the possiblity that this is something else too, like coccidiosis;  [linkhttp://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1622&articleid=727]http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1622&articleid=727[/link];
"The primary sign of an animal suffering with coccidiosis is diarrhea. The diarrhea may be mild to severe depending on the level of infection. Blood and mucous may be present, especially in advanced cases. Severely affected animals may also vomit, lose their appetite, become dehydrated, and in some instances, die from the disease."

       The link discusses the disease in puppies, but older dogs can get it too. It can be brought on by stress; (the OP's family visiting).

I am happy to report that Neo is doing better today. No blood in his stools...not even runny or slimey, no vomitting...and his Pedigree is in the dumpster!! HALLELUJAH!! Now, I just hope he stays this way. I am going to put him on a better brand of food after a few more days of home cooked meals. I want to keep him on the bland diet for right now so his tummy can calm down again.

I will try to yogurt as suggested...the pumpkin worked wonders.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all of you!

      He could be a little dehydrated from the diarrhea or his system could be low on electrolytes; you may want to rest him until his energy returns. Pedialyte is supposed to be good for dogs recovering from diarrhea.
