    Back from the vet

I took Harley to the vet he got his shots and his K9 advantix thanks to the tick I found.  He has already started heartworm meds.  Overall I think I have a heathy happy dog and btw he gained a pound from the last time he went to the vet about a week and ahalf ago but he is not overweight.  Vet says all looks really good and he is healthy!  Phew!  But DH will not be happy with the bill thats for sure.

Yah, those vet bills always make me feel as if I should be entitled to some company shares now also! [:D]

Well with all the money we spend at the vet's you think they would give us freebies or frequent visit credit for money off.  Oh well so much for wishful thinking.  I told Harley when I got home whatever you do be good boy so DH won't really complain about spending lots on you.  in 3 weeks I have spent 300 at the vets office and I still have to get Harley's liscense. DH says no more toys and such for Harley...He can have his feed and treats but no more toys....atleast for awhile....my piggy bank is busted.  I have spent more on the vet for him then I do on my horse and she gets more shots then he does.  It costs me about $100 for her.  My horse is certainly a cheaper vet bill.  Thank god for that.

Being a guardian to ;pets nowadays is a luxury.   Sorry it will not get less expensive anytime soon.   My suggestion would be to start a savings account to take care of these bills that way you don't have to dip into the regular funds.  My bills are always in the hundreds even the large animal vet is up in $$$.

    Good luck!

We joke whenever Pepper goes to the vet that it's $200 a pop.  lol.. but she's our allergy dog and we wouldn't trade her for anything at this point.  :D

What vaccs did you get for Harley? Multiple at the same visit?

I spent over $300 last week at the vet too on Bailey, who according to the vet is "incredibly healthy." No vaccs either! What cost so much is that I wanted a full panel done, for future reference. So...that was totally elective on my part. But it will help in future years if and when there are any problems, to diagnose them quicker.

So if I'm spending that much on a dog with no problems, no vaccs, no teeth cleaning, etc. I can only imagine how much it would cost if there was a problem or I was getting vaccs. [sm=eek.gif]

A doggie saving acct is a good idea patt_b!

I take Buck in for a full blood panel next month.  My vet charges $140 for the full panel.  Since he is 11 and has low thyroid I am now having a full panel done every year, and a thyroid only 6 months after the full panel.  Thank God I am what my vet calls Green File (and our folders are green)  Ones that he knows will pay can pay over time if they want.  When I got in to pick up Interceptor, Synovi G3, thryoid pills, etc, etc, or even bring one of the dogs in they ask me if I want to be billed.  It is funny because I never have a $0 balance.  I either owe or have credit.  right now I have a little over $80 credit. Like i picked up some HW pills and I wote out the check for $75 before i went.  that gave me some credit, and the other day i picked up some synoviG3 for KayCee nd wrote the check for $100 and that gave me over $35 more in credit.  The most I ever owned was $2300 for Hunter when he was in that 8 days for AIHA brought on by Proheart6--and died.  Most Credit I ever had was a little over $200.

Wow...I'm glad we get to use the vet on base and I use the  mobile vet clinic when it comes to town.  So far for 4 dogs and 2 cats I have spent :

    4 HW tests @ $18 ea
    4 Fecal tests @ $8 ea
    2 Dewormer @ $6 ea
    4 Canine Rabies @ $8 ea
    2 Feline Rabies @ $10 ea
    1 Feline neuter & full exam @ $35 ( mobile vet clinic )
    1 microchip @ $10 ( mobile vet clinic )
    5 boxes of Heartgard ( 6 mos ) $110 for 2 dogs under 25 lbs, 2 cat, 1 dog 50-100lbs
    Ivermectin $8
    Ear Drops $5
    Ear Ointment for yeast $6
    Droncit injection @ $8
    FVCCR vax @ $15
    FVCCR vax @ $8 ( mobile vet clinic )

$375 so far.  This week I have another HW test ( $18 ),  another box of Heartgard to buy ($30 ) and another rabies vax  ($8)  and 5 microchips @ $15 each for a total of $133 and then a spay at $65.  That should do me for the year . I'll be good to go til December.  $600 for 6 animals is pretty good I think. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed nothing more serious than routine care occurs.

    In reply to Firestorm:
this is what I used to do and it may sound silly, but my husband never said anything about mounting vetbills when I told him I would use my couponsavings. I clip coupons all the time anyway and then found a website where you can order more for a small s&h fee and I was saving around $25 a week, in a really good week up to $40 and I put that in an envelope designated for our pets.
Of course when Chelsea had to have her emergency c-section it blew our budget, but I had just started a job and that helped.
Now I use part of my income for all the expenses.
Under normal circumstances your dog should be healthy and good to go for another year. You could divide your expense into 12 months and just set that amount aside each month so you have it for next year.

We have OUR savings account, a special savings account for vet emergencies that we flat do NOT touch, and a third account that a specific amount gets deposited into each month for routine stuff like rabies, hw testing and meds.  I do my own vaccines, but do have titers pulled when they do the draw for heartworm, so pretty typically, unless someone is sick, we go ONCE per year.  And, I haven't had a sick dog....knock on wood.  But, that's what the emergency account is there for.

Oh yes I have one, every Saturday morning we walk to the bank and deposit his money.  The people at the bank are crazy about him, he is such a Casanova, he is a hit with the ladies.
