Skin Problem on almost 2yo dobie

Deoji started showing signs of a skin issue about a month ago. Then it was about 1/2 as bad as it is now (in the pics below). Investigating his environment, I thought it could be his crate bed which hubby had washed with a fair bit of bleach this last time. Upon removing it, he started to improve. That was about 2 weeks ago. Just in the past couple of days however, it's come back... with a vengeance.

He will be going to the vet next week, but I was wondering if anyone here could give me a heads up on what to expect to hear/learn when I do go.

He's on EP Wholistic Duck & Oatmeal.

    Here are the pics...

    OUCH!

That definitely looks, to me, like a contact allergy. Have you had the carpet cleaned, recently? Switched laundry detergent? Maybe the snow melted and he's laying in the grass?

We haven't changed detergent or anything else like that, but we did relocate to IA from GA, so it's a whole new slew of pollens and such for them to deal with.  He has a vet appt for Monday afternoon (had to get a recommendation as we didn't have a vet up here yet) and I was instructed to give Benadryl until then.

That might explain it. We're known for MAKING allergies in Ga, where there weren't allergies, before[;)]

How're you liking this spring weather? It's just beautiful, today, where I live.

I think you misunderstood. [;)]  We were in Georgia and are now in Iowa.  I'm SOOOOOOOOO enjoying not suffering miserably from the allergies this spring and last fall was awfully nice as well.

Actually, we're having nice weather this weekend with a high up near 80 today (considering I was scraping frost off my car 1 1/2 weeks ago, it's a big change). [:D]

Looks like my Boxer, Miss Penny, she use to be like that, her underside all red and hot hot hot, even her ears, she'd do the army crawl on the throw carpets till she was raw and bloody sometimes, even on the concrete slab outside she'd rub her face till it bled - I switcher her dog food to California Natural Sweet Potato and Herring, gave it 2-3 months to work it into her system and boy is her coat nice, she got wiskers now too, my vet cant even believe it, if you look up the info on this brand it specifically is for dogs with allergies, its worth a try in my book [:D]  hope your boy is feeling better soon, and dont let your new vet keep giving him allergy shots, they'll get immune to them in no time and your just waisting your money, do the long haul and it'll pay off, it did for me, Good Luck and let us know what worked, maybe we can start a list around here.

my dobie has had some skin problems, rashes, bumps, pimples etc.  the first thing he did was a thyroid panel (simple blood test) to rule out any deficiencies.  it was neg.  he put her on a fish oil, omega 3 supplement, 4 squirts a day.  this has helped a great deal, her coat is nice and shiny. i take her collar off when she's in the house and clean it each time.  she'd get a terrible rash from it and its amazing how dirty it gets!  good luck and hope this helps a little

What does your vet think it is; did he check for mange?
    • Silver
It is allergy related and not mange.  He has him on a steroid, antibiotic, and recommended continuing the Benadryl.  The antibiotic b/c he saw the beginning signs of a skin infection from all of the scratching and wanted to nip it in the bud NOW, before it got bad.  He thinks it could be something from outside since nothing in the house has changed (except for the house itself, of course) such as laundry detergent, air freshener, even the Febreeze we use is the same one we used in GA.  It could also be food related.  He did recommend a fatty acid supplement which we'll likely start up when we change their food (changing to the fish-based TWO).

Since the vet visit and the drugs, he's been scratching/itching A LOT less and the hair is starting the grow back nicely.  The redness is completely gone, too.

How long did your vet give you antibiotics for? Minimum for skin infections is 3 weeks...

Wow, really? I didn't know that.

My vet had been giving me 14 days' worth. That can't be good. This last time, I decided to treat it, myself (there were no pustules, nothing major, just scratching and a slight smell) with cinnamon and oil of oregano, and I had a feeling that I should do it for a month. Worked like a charm. Maybe that's WHY it worked so well. Geez.

Yep, not everybody does... so thats why I ask. I really shouldn't be second guessing REAL vets.. but I love this stuff and can't help it...
