Mast Cell Tumor & Benadryl

• Mast Cell Tumor & Benadryl leslie__chessies Posted : 4/6/2007 8:12:13 PM Well Jazzie has yet another mast cell tumor.  This one is on her side near her abdomen.  She is scheduled to have the mass removed next Thursday by a new vet; our usual vet has retired.  This vet had decided to wait a week before the surgery and has asked me to give Jasmine 50mg of Benedryl 2x a day and 10 mg of Pepcid AC 1x a day.  She said the Benedryl is so that the tumor will not release histamines when excised. Has anyone heard of this before?  100mg a day of Benedryl seems excessive to me...Poor Jasmine is now sleeping practically 20 hours a day! Jessie weighs about 62 pounds and my vet said she can have 2 benedryl 2 to 3 times a day for her allergies, so the amount your vet prescribed sounds about right. • cheryl phillips Posted : 4/6/2007 9:10:11 PM I am new to this site but have had a lot of experience with mast cell tumors with my two labs. Yes, I give my lab either benedryl or hydroxyzine every day to help with keeping histamine down for re occurance.   My lab has had 9 mast cell tumors removed since she was 2, she is now 5 1/2.  My vet recommends a shot of benedryl at the start of surgery as well for the same reason.   What are you feeding your dog?  Is your dog itchy?   Make sure that the diet you feed is high fat, high protein and low carb.  Mast cells/cancer like to feed off carbs.   Good luck.   0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • M.W.Lewis Posted : 4/7/2007 5:24:54 PM Mast cells release histamine as an immune response to something perceived as dangerous to the body. Histamine is harmful to the antigen (the foreign invader) and it also causes inflammation of the surrounding tissues. It seems to make sense to premedicate the way your vet described. She had a benign mass removed just last fall...I hate to put her through these surgeries and she's putting us in the poorhouse!   Hydroxyzine is a brand of antihistamine.  She takes 75 mg twice a day.  We found that benedryl on a daily basis wasn't enough for her.  She only has benedryl at the start of her surgery to remove the mast cell tumours.    I hear you, I have researched mast cell tumours so so much and there really isn't anything you can do but give your dog a spot check weekly, feed a good quality food high in protein and fat and remove any that you find as you find them.   We also don't like putting our lab through all these surgeries, she has had 9 or 10 mast cell tumours removed plus other surgeries for lumps tha we thought were MCT's but ended up to be cysts.  Also, it is keeping us in the poor house as well.   Good luck and let us know how things go. 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • leslie__chessies Posted : 4/13/2007 12:54:40 PM Thanks for the warm wishes, guys.  She woke me up last night crying, but she seems to be better today.  She's been schlepping my shoe around and barking at every leaf that blows by the window, so it looks like she's on the road to recovery.  To add insult to injury, I think I will have to put an e-collar on her, as she's licking her wound.
