Black Spot in Eye

    Black Spot in Eye

    I've googled and can't find anything that looks remotely like this, and unfortunately it doesn't show up in pictures!

    My dog Cole is 6.  When I was looking at his eyes last Saturday, I noticed a dark black spot, approximately 2cm in diameter at the bottom of his left eye.  It appears to be BETWEEN the cornea and the iris.  I also looked at his eye later when he was lying down on his side, and the black spot had moved!  It's always at an edge that's closest to the ground.

    What could this be?  We have our annual vet appointment in June and I was planning to ask the Vet then.  When his eyes dilate real large, it appears that the dot would be a slight obstruction.  He hasn't injured his eye and even if he had, I have no idea how something could get between the cornea and the iris!

    Any ideas what this could be?  It doesn't match any of the eye disease pictures I've looked up on the net.

       I don't know if these will be of any help, but I found this ; [linkhttp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061014123655AA13LOQ]http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061014123655AA13LOQ[/link];

    "We always noticed this black spot in our dogs eye and we thought it was just part of the color of his eye. Recently we noticed that it was moving around. He has had the spot for all of his life so it is not just something that is stuck. Can anyone tell me what it could be? If you need more details just tell me."

     " Yes, my dog has the same thing, It eye dieses my germand shepard was sent to a vet that specialised in eyes, it will get worse if you do not treat it,my dog was given an onitment and drops that she took for a long time,it has now cleared up, Sorry i do not remember the name of what my dog had. GET that dog to the vet,befor it looses it's sight, "

      You may have seen these already but here's a couple possibilities;

       pannus;  [linkhttp://workingdogs.com/doc0087.htm]http://workingdogs.com/doc0087.htm[/link]

      iris melanoma;  [linkhttp://www.animal-eye-specialists.com/iris.htm]http://www.animal-eye-specialists.com/iris.htm[/link]

        The only way to know if this is serious or not is to take him to the vet soon, rather than waiting until June.

    My basset hound Fred has what seems to be the same thing. It is a black spot that actually moves around at the bottom of his left eye. I brought him to the Vet for an eye check. I remember the Vet saying it was nothing to worry about, and he is correct. Fred has now had this for about 5 years, it has not gotten any bigger, nor caused any harm to his eye or vision.
    Hope this helps.

    Thank you for the replies.  It's definitely not Pannus given the symptoms that are described.  I'll give my Vet a call and see what they think.  The melanoma thing is worrisome, but I'm glad that Fred's turned out to be nothing, that does sound very similar.  Dogluvr, you would happen to have any pictures of Fred's eye, would you?

    Thanks!
