    Flea meds & seizures?

    I'm curious.

We have been in the dog business for over 25 years now and have had ample opportunity to see a wide variety of dogs throughout their lives.  In the past 10 years or so we have had a number of dogs suddenly become epileptic as adults.  Their vets were at a loss as to why the sudden adult onset epilepsy.  We saw this happen with a husky mix, a daschund, a cocker spainel, and several mutts.  The only common demoninator that we can find is the monthly flea preventative they have been on since puppyhood.    I'm curious if anyone else out there has noticed this?

We have reported this to our state vet research facility, but have yet to hear a thing from them.

Actually growing up we had a dog Scrappy who got his first seizure at about..maybe 4..?? It was a Grand Mal and the vet prescribes Phenobarbital...
next we got a dog Jazz...again at about 3 he got his first seizure...He was also on Phenobarbital...both dogs were on Pheno for their whole lives.

And then....Shadow..a got we got from the SPCA had his first seizure..well again at about 3 I guess, maybe 4. Again they did tests and diagonosed nothing but Epilepsy, and he is on of course Pheno. He is 8 now.

I have often wondered why so many of our dogs have had Seizures, it seems so wierd, especially to have 3 dogs in about 15 years all with Epilepsy. I know when Scrappy was alive (at least when he was young) there were no monthly flea preventives around. Then Programm came out and our dogs were on that till Advanage came out now they are on Frontline.
