Dog with Asthma??

    Dog with Asthma??

I need to research it more but I thought Id post here first.  Our dog Daisy has this weird wheezing thing she does from time to time.  We asked as the vets office what they thought it was but they said unless they saw her doing it they couldnt say.  And shes never done it at the office.
It seems to be set off by us spraying something ( cooking spray or having just put on perfume when we come into the room with her, or air freshener) at times, but then sometimes she will just go off doing it.  Id say it happens maybe twice a week.
Just wondering if anyone has heard of this and what they think it might be and what to do to treat it or help her.  Like I said Im going to research it now but I thought Id post here first.
She is a beagle and is 27 months old, so just a little over 2 years.  She doesnt seem to have any other issues although we did take her in last year for hip issues and she has some arthritis setting in her hip joints already.

    thanks

I wanted to add that when she has one of these it lasts about 2 to 4 minutes.  We try to sit with her and calm her but who knows if this is helping or not.  Once she quits she goes on to act normal.  And then there are times when she can go weeks without having it happen.

I suspect it is what is referred to as reverse sneezing....if you have a video camera, or can borow one that will work fine...but what you describe could be, but very very rarely asthma...get a video or borrow one

If it is reverse sneezing, which it sounds like to me also, I have a dog who does it and have found that the episode can be stopped my cupping your hand over the dog's nostrils and making him gulp through his mouth.

Thank you so much for your opinions.  I think it may be that as well after researching it.  Although they say it only lasts a few seconds and with Daisy its minutes, so I think Ill try catching it on video and taking that to the vet and going from there.
    Thanks again

I've had a couple of dogs who did that -- they can panic so badly it makes it go on and on.

Cupping your hand over the nose so the dog breathes thru its mouth -- that SHOULD help.  The one gal I had who had that the worst, I discovered if I literally put my mouth over her muzzle and puffed air into her nose it would make it stop immediately (almost like artificial recussitation except the dog is conscious).

That's probably a step further than most owner/guardians would be comfortable doing -- but just calming the dog should help.

In honesty, I would try Rescue Remedy -- Squirt it right in the mouth under the tongue/gum (it's just drops-- it won't cause choking) and I'd imagine it might help cease the spasms.

The other thing would be a homeopathic -- little blue tubes at the health store.  Boiron brand -- try the one called Ipecachuana.

Just one or two of those tiny little pellets - crush in a 3X5 card and pour ON the tongue.  It will dissolve right there - no swallowing needed and it will help stop the spasming.  This isn't a big pill -- this is a tiny tiny little bead about the size of one of the tiny little beads in a Contact cold pill (it's not that at all --I'm just giving you a size relationship).

    Homeopathics work FAST.  Try it.

Thanks Callie, Ill look into it.  First Im going to try the covering the nose when she has an episode.  Then Ill try the homeopathic first and then if I can find the rescue remedy..........or vise versa depending on what I find.  I just always assumed she had some sort of asthma and the vet never seemed too concerned about it.  Weird....reverse sneezing .  Thanks to everyone!!!

Rescue Remedy and homeopathics you'll find in the same place -- a good health store.  I'm not a GNC type of person -- either a Mom and Pop type of small store or something like Whole Foods if you have one.  They'll probably both be in the same section or quite near each other.

Rescue Remedy is in the "Bach Flower Remedies" part -- and there will be a whole homeopathy section nearby.

I have asthma -- I have a tube of Ipecachuana right near me -- helps with spasms of most any kind actually.

that above statement makes  me think of something...seems like every thing makes me think of something...Years ago I had a local society person  bring in her dog and I had to x-ray the chest...So for a chest x-ray it is best to sedate them  to at least get 2 seconds exposure...She said do not sedate her (the dog, not the person) because I can get her to stop breathing...I told her it might require a couple x-rays  in the hopes that the dog will rest for two seconnds. Any we positioned the dog on the table and the lady said let me know when you want to take the picture...
So I said about now...she proceeds to stick the dogs entire muzzle in her mouth and blew and sure enought the dog held its breath long enough to get the picture...So,?  I thought it was interesting

    Hello everyone!!!

Ok she had her first reverse sneeze today.  So shes gone  5 days since an episode.  So I held my hand over her nose and she does stop pretty quick but then when I remove it and back off she starts back up again.  I did this three times and she'd just start back up again.  So I think Im going to look into the stuff Callie recommends.
So weird though.....Just thought Id let you know whats been going on so far.
We do have a good health store nearby so Ill stop by there this weekend.

Sometimes with my dog it seems to help to give him a medium-sized ball of something soft, like rice or bread, to get him to swallow. You could try that.
