    question about diabetes

Hi, My sons Golden retriever is 2 years old and I have always noticed that she drinks alot, I mean she will drink 1/2 gallon of spring water in one time to her bowl. She has to pee every 2 hours and has a tremendous appetite, but never gets fat. Then I was thinking could she have diabetes?  Does anyone know how you go about6 testing your dog for this, and is it normal for a dog to drink so much. I'd say every time she goes to her bowl to drink she just about empties it. Thanks, Jewels

Is the dog on any medications?  My dog drink a lot and ate a lot when he was on antibiotics and prednisone/anthihistamine.  Once he came off the meds, he was fine.  I had them do a blood test anyway just to make sure.  They can test the glucose through a blood test.

No Leyla is not on any medications, She basically has been pretty healthy, just drinks so much water as if she were out in the desert lol, and she has to pee every 2 hours even in the middle of the night she wakes you up.

A simple blood panel can rule out many possible problems.  Have it checked just to feel better if anything!  The peeing is probably due to the tremendous water consumption, so i see that as less of a symptom than just a natural effect to drinking lots.  But you should get her checked just to make sure everything is ok.  Some dogs just like to drink alot, sometimes it's a disease, though.

A blood panel WITH a urinalysis is what you need. The levels of glucose in the blood and urine are important for making a diagnosis, but there are quite a few things that can cause a dog to drink a lot of water, so I'd get the full panel done. It will probably run about 100 dollars, but its probably worth it for peace of mind alone.
