Hi Dogmother - I wanted to offer my condolences also - I know how hard it is.  I just lost my beloved Michelle (a Cocker Spaniel) on the 12th from a brain tumor.  It was one of the most awful things I've been through and losing her sent me into a state of clinical depression.  I too work from home and not getting those little visits throughout the day just tore me apart.   Although its only been near 3 weeks I can now look at her photo (that's always hung on the fridge and will always remain there) and smile a bit.   I remember our wonderful 11 years together (she was a rescue and was 2 yo when we became a family).  The same will happen for you in time.
8 days after Michelle's passing a rescued an 8 month old poodle mix.   Everyone told me it was "too soon" but for me it was the best cure for my depression.  Prancer can never replace Michelle, nor would I want her to, but she's been the bright spot in my life since we found each other on [linkhttp://www.petfinder.com]www.petfinder.com[/link].
I'm enjoying watching and working with Prancer's personality (oh so different than my Michelle, but a delight just the same).
I'm also consoled knowing (or "feeling" if you prefer) that Michelle is now with my father - I know they'd get along perfectly.
The only downside is that I'm finding myself a little anxious about potential health issues in Prancer (I guess you'd call it hypocondria on her behalf !) so I fully understand your concern about another dog getting cancer.   Just try to remember that every day we give our dogs a great day is reason is celebrate and even when they go too soon (isn't is always too soon ?) that we've loved one of the best types of love on this Earth.
