Honestly? If I were you I'd hightail it to the nearest TCVM vet -- DO NOT leave your regular vet -- not what I"m saying. But I can tell you after what Foxy went thru and the TREMENDOUS success we had, that the Chinese herbals are incredible to help detox and heal the liver.

On the left side of the page is a locator -- there are a TON of tcvm vets in Pennsylvania. (There are ALWAYS a ton of TCVM vets anywhere there are horses! Because it works so incredibly on them and it's so visible to see acupuncture work.)
There were several different herbals they used on Foxy -- to detox the liver AND to soothe the liver (in Dr. DiNatale's plain English way of speaking, not only can the liver get toxic, or hurt ... but it can just plain get P.O'd at times. And there are times when you just need to 'soothe' it -- in fact, one of the pills Foxy took that kept his liver completely settled down was called "Soothe the Liver". (Remember he almost died of a liver infection almost 3 years ago -- and he fully recovered -- even as such an old old dog, and his liver remained healthy til the day he died of old age at 2 months shy of 19 last March).
Milk thistle -- YES. Milk thistle helps the liver throw off toxins and helps 'detox' the liver (those are two different things actually). It also helps protect the kidneys. However -- One of the things I've learned in the whole IMHA thing is that milk thistle the herb is very helpful BUT using milk thistle that is actually decocted in alcohol is FAR more effective. So using the tincture (and HerbPharm is the best brand -- Billy takes a whole bottle of it every 6 days -- if you can get 2 droppersful down this pup twice a day that would be awesome). There are ways of evaporating the alcohol out of it-- but frankly Billy doesn't give a rip -- I squirt it on his food and it's NO problemo!!
Where kidney failure results in toxins that attack the stomach (ulcers, etc.) where the animal truly feels terribly nauseus. However in liver problems, the toxins actually shunt into the brain -- so the nausea is actually 'mental' -- so if you can get rid of the toxins they actually 'feel' better. the fact that this dog is eating is a GOOD thing.
Acupuncture will help heal the liver and will help throw off toxins. Chinese herbals (there is one called Ecliptex that is sort of a super milkthistle-type herbal but it's only prescription -- and yeah, most Chinese herbs ARE strong enough where they are only available by prescription from a DVM thow is TCVM (traditional Chinese veterinary medicine) or DOM (Doctor of Oriental Medicine).
This isn't going to 'fight' with whatever your regular vet is doing - this will supplement it and augment it.
I emailed you my number again -- sorry I was so late. We're down to one car and we literally walked in at 10:00 p.m.
