    Calling Callie!!!!!

Ok, I don't want to go into the hows and whys at this point but I need YOU!!!!

I have a puppy with Liver ALT reading 234...she is on an antibiotics amox 150 and meds to help heal the liver(sorry their at home). I have the liver cleansing diet right next to me but am wondering if this is too extreme for a 7 month old pup.
She is eating fine, devicating fine and yes house broken now that she is with me. She is now showing lots of energy and running and playing with the rest of the clan here. We are scheduled to return for more blood work in two weeks but I want to do the best I can for this lil one and I know you will have some great insight for me [:D]
    Thanks in advance!

I have Callies phone number, so if she doesn't get on, Jaime, email me at home to remind me to email it to you.

I know a few details and I'm sorry to hear things aren't improved.  Hugs to you and ear scritches to that baby!

    Thanks Glenda!
I know I have Callie's number here on the PC but try and find it is another story.

She's doing OK, no parasites now through the last worming YAY!!!
I had her back at the vet on Saturday for a fecal and a weight...lost another 4 oz. Eating everything at feed time as well as goodies and suppliments from Nature's Farmacy, she's playing and running and very confident she went to visit her brother and auntie on Saturday and chased them all over my friends yard stealing toys

It sounds like you're already doing everything right. Recheck the bloodwork in 2 weeks, and if the liver enzymes are still elevated (they're mild now) then you'll want to get the bile acids checked.

Good luck with your pupper, and I wouldn't worry too much as long as he continues to act happy and healthy.

Definately not Callie but I know that milk thistle helps in liver conditions.

Milk thistle, SAMe, and I'd do the liver cleansing diet. Emma went on a pretty extreme diet, at 10 months old, but that's what it took[;)] She got very, very little protein, and NO meat at all. SAMe should be given in the morning, an hour before breakfast. Denosyl is the brand (it comes from the vet) that I use, because Emma barfs it if it's too strong. She needs the cat dose. You can get it for humans, at Walmart or the health food store. It's about $1 per pill. Your pup may need more than one, depending on her size.

Regular fasting (like raw feeders sometimes do) is also helpful for the liver. The liver has a lot to do with breaking down and processing foods (and I don't know enough to explain it to you, but I know enough from seeing it and reading about it that I can tell you it does[;)]) and sometimes, it just needs a rest. Emma's improved dramatically since I started weekly half day fasts. Digestive enzymes, like Prozyme, can also help.

Give your puppy some kisses from me. I hope she does well!

Honestly?  If I were you I'd hightail it to the nearest TCVM vet -- DO NOT leave  your regular vet -- not what I"m saying.  But I can tell you after what Foxy went thru and the TREMENDOUS success we had, that the Chinese herbals are incredible to help detox and heal the liver.

    [linkhttp://www.tcvm.com]http://www.tcvm.com[/link]

On the left side of the page is a locator -- there are a TON of tcvm vets in Pennsylvania.  (There are ALWAYS a ton of TCVM vets anywhere there are horses!  Because it works so incredibly on them and it's so visible to see acupuncture work.)

There were several different herbals they used on Foxy -- to detox the liver AND to soothe the liver (in Dr. DiNatale's plain English way of speaking, not only can the liver get toxic, or hurt ... but it can just plain get P.O'd at times.  And there are times when you just need to 'soothe' it -- in fact, one of the pills Foxy took that kept his liver completely settled down was called "Soothe the Liver".  (Remember he almost died of a liver infection almost 3 years ago -- and he fully recovered -- even as such an old old dog, and his liver remained healthy til the day he died of old age at 2 months shy of 19 last March).

Milk thistle -- YES.  Milk thistle helps the liver throw off toxins and helps 'detox' the liver (those are two different things actually).  It also helps protect the kidneys.  However -- One of the things I've learned in the whole IMHA thing is that milk thistle the herb is very helpful BUT using milk thistle that is actually decocted in alcohol is FAR more effective.  So using the tincture (and HerbPharm is the best brand -- Billy takes a whole bottle of it every 6 days -- if you can get 2 droppersful down this pup twice a day that would be awesome).  There are ways of evaporating the alcohol out of it-- but frankly Billy doesn't give a rip -- I squirt it on his food and it's NO problemo!!

Where kidney failure results in toxins that attack the stomach (ulcers, etc.) where the animal truly feels terribly nauseus.  However in liver problems, the toxins actually shunt into the brain -- so the nausea is actually 'mental' -- so if you can get rid of the toxins they actually 'feel' better.  the fact that this dog is eating is a GOOD thing.

Acupuncture will help heal the liver and will help throw off toxins.  Chinese herbals (there is one called Ecliptex that is sort of a super milkthistle-type herbal but it's only prescription -- and yeah, most Chinese herbs ARE strong enough where they are only available by prescription from a DVM thow is TCVM (traditional Chinese veterinary medicine) or DOM (Doctor of Oriental Medicine).

This isn't going to 'fight' with whatever your regular vet is doing - this will supplement it and augment it.

I emailed you my number again -- sorry I was so late.  We're down to one car and we literally walked in at 10:00 p.m.

Thanks everyone and Callie for the details...I knew you'd have something special for me [:D]

She is on the SAMe now, our vet is very good and also suggested the milk thistle going forward. He is open to holistic treatments and I will get in touch with a TCVM.

She is eating fine, in fact she eats her food and wants anything we are eating as well. That is the bigger concern for me as she is eating and still losing ounces as of last week. I have now gotten a digital scale to monitor her weight gain/lose daily with the hopes that it will show an improvement. I know scales can be calibrated differently or knocked off the calibration, when I requested she be taken to the vet she was 16.9lbs at that vet and when we went to my vet for a second opinion she was 16.2lbs, I chalked that up to different scales/calibration but when I returned to my vet with her on Saturday she was 15.8lbs. She looks like her body weight is more then it was 2 weeks ago but it is also changing structure/muscle develoment so I guess that could be a reason for it...I just pray that we will beat this and she can grow into a happy healthy puppy who will have many years to make memories.

Yup. That sounds familiar. Poor little Emma lost FIVE POUNDS when she first got sick (she was very, very sick, back then). Prozyme put it back on. A good part of the initial loss (I'd say the first pound or two) was from swelling that went down. The rest was Emma weight. She'd been almost 20 pounds, and made it all the way down to 15.8. I found the yahoo liver group (GO there, it's so great!), desperate for SOMETHING, and they said 'buy prozyme now'.

GREAT suggestion Jennie (me with the Prozyme in my fridge too).  It simply helps the dog 'use' the food more effectively -- digests and 'uses' it.

I started Markie on suppliments from Nature's Farmacy
    [linkhttp://www.naturesfarmacywest.com/Supplements.htm]http://www.naturesfarmacywest.com/Supplements.htm[/link]
this year due to him showing as a "special" this past year and we have their Dogzymes Digestive Enhancer Liquid Dispersible probiotic for her as soon as she got here along with their Ultimate vitamin suppliment. Her stools are great and tight, yeah I know...LOL!
I'll be happy to see the scale go up instead of down...I'll be throwing a party!!!
