BAD Reaction to Lepto/Lyme shot

Iv heard its fatal if a dog gets it... Im going to talk to my vet again about all of this.

ANY illness could be fatal, that doesn't mean that it WILL be fatal.  It is treatable, as I believe its like most illnesses where the earlier the treatment, the better.
Clauzilla,,,I'm glad to know that those dogs  that were treated for Lepto had the new vaccine. Well,,,,I don't mean that I'm glad that they got it anyway, I'm just glad to KNOW that the new vaccine isn't probably any better than the old one. Again, we must weigh the risks of the side effects against the illness.

AIHA is one that can be cause by vaccines, and many more. do a google search on vaccine side effects. We no longer vaccinate older pets.

I know all about that.  Even tho it wasn't considered a vax, I lost my 4 year old golden retriever, Hunter, to AIHA following his ProHeart6 injection.  Ten months after his death the FDA "requested" it be removed from the market because of the extremely high number of reactions/deaths, many of which were AIHA.  So far it has not been allowed back, pending more research and testing.  I will never use it again no matter what.

I belong to one forum that is strictly made of up of people who either have lost a dog to AIHA, have one battling it right now, or is in remission and many have said their vets are concerned because AIHA is being seen more and more often.  Many believe dogs are being over vaxed    My older golden will be 12 in 5 weeks and all he gets is rabies because it is law required.  My 7 year old only get rabies because of the severe reaction she had almost 5 years ago to her annuals.  And since our 5 year old golden mix is adopted and we don't know her background, I have been giving her yearly vax, but after this year, we are going to go to every 3 years.

People who have never had a dog with AIHA can't imagine how horrible it is.  It is up and down and you have hope and then you lose hope. The poor dog is on a ton of meds and most time transfusions are involved.  You can go broke in a heart beat, but that doesn't matter to you as much as the loss of your beloved dog.

After watching my Hunter in ICU for 8 days I never want that again.  I avoid (as much as possible) vax, meds, and even change of food to try to prevent this horrid disease from striking any of my other goldens.

The leptospirosis bacteria attacks the kidneys, and then moves into the bloodstream. If its not caught and treated early, it can be VERY serious. Like lyme, it takes over 6 weeks of antibiotic treatment to cure the disease. I wouldn't consider that a simple treatable disease...

If I had to choose between my dogs having lepto or parvo, I'd pick the parvo... if that helps you understand the seriousness of the disease.

I'm not sure I would pick Parvo over Lepto,,,but I think the fact that there are so many strains to this illness is what makes it tricky.
Are we supposed to get our dog vaccinated against it twice a year on top of it?  Do we know which strains our dog will come up against?
If I lived where Louie lived and the type of life that Louie lives,,, I would have to think about it, but I don't know if I would consider it if he had a reaction to the vaccine.
If your dog is ill and you don't take care of him, take him to the doctor,,,then I guess any illness could be really bad. I'm not making light of this illness,,,I just wonder how much worth it that it is to subject our dog to these bad reactions.

Soooooooooooo much food for thought... WOW.... I read one post and then agree... then the next post on yet another valid point and agree.

Right now IM think the heck with doing it to any of my dogs anymore. They are getting older and its HARD on them I can see it.... I don't vacinate my cat anymore. She is 11 years old and bascially is an indoor cat only to go lay on the deck to get sunshine on warm days.
Then when I see a beaver and raccoon or a skunk and other wild critters then Im glad I did do the vac's... Just walking through the woods today with them Im picking tiny ticks off them... UGH....they are as small as a pin point... Drives me nuts....

I really was scared about Louie and thinking I could have lost him. He was clearly in a bad way when I got up and found him. His mouth even hung open and it was hard to pry it open to get the benedryl down him and pain med he acted like he had lock jaw. And like I said it took 7 days before he really bounced back. Now to me ... that's extreme.

My Vet clinic is a AAHA clinic so they are top notch in care. But they do listen to me about alot of things and they don't push me. I did Rescue for 5 years mainly Westies and Scotties and Iv seen alot. We always got in the worst cases from Puppymills here in Missouri.

I will say this and I truly mean it.. We all know our pets alot better than any vet. We know their strenghts and there weakness. Louie is my more sensitive dog. He gets cold easy....he has a very sensitive stomach.

Now Alley my demodex dog that Iv spent a life savings on is like Iron... That girl can take so much and bounce back and not get sick. I should have known better and listened to my enter voice on not giving him 3 shots that morning.
