No Fleas, No Mites, but Itchy as ever!

No Fleas, No Mites, but Itchy as ever!

Any advice on helping my 4-month old male GSD w/ itchy skin?  We've had him for about 6 weeks now, and as far as we can remember, he has always been itchy.  We went to the vet, and she said it was dry skin (no fleas, no bugs, etc) She gave us vitamins (big capsule - fish oil and other vitamins, can't recall the name) about 2 weeks ago, but it has not helped at all so far.  He is itching and scratching all the time!  I feel so bad for him.  I checked his skin, and it's not red, but it looks like he has a bad case of dandruff or something of the sorts.

Any advice?  He is due for another vet visit at the end of the month, so I will be sure to bring it up again, but hoping to soothe him in the meantime.

    Thank you.
    Maggie

What kind of food are you feeding?

I was just going to ask about food.

Its worth noting that supplementing with oils etc. take time to begin producing noticeable effects . . . . since it works through the animals digestive system the effects may take several weeks before results are noticeable.  I'd continue to give it a chance . . . . .

We've actually been feeding him Royal Canine which is what was recommend by the breeder...Will also keep giving him the supplements and hope it helps him.
    Thanks!

    Maggie,

My first thought, too, would be food sensitivities.  Try to change over to California Natural or Innova, if you can.  They have very few ingredients, and you want to try a food that has different ingredients in it than the Royal Canin does.  The reason I like California Natural is that it has very few ingredients in it, so it's a good food to try for food sensitivities.

However, if it is food related, then this means you need to cut out all store bought treats since they usually have ingredients that can bother dogs that are sensitive.

It could also be a flea.  Notice I said a flea.  As in, one flea can bite, and it can cause a dog that's allergic to the salivia to itch.  Then, that one flea gets eaten by the dog.  The dog goes out for a walk, and another flea hops on, etc.  I have a dog that the fleas just love.  She bites with both food allergies and fleas.  I can pretty much tell the difference at this point.

Regular, daily combing with a flea comb will help you to determine if it is a flea or not.

Food allergies can sometimes show up early; it's more likely to be that than environmental allergies at his age. I also agree with Shonin that it will likely take longer for the supplements to help. Don't change over to Innova, but California Natural would be a good choice. In order to see if he has a food allergy you need to feed something that only has one protein and one carb, like California Natural Lamb and Rice or Sensible Choice Lamb and Rice by Royal Canin. Stay away from foods with chicken and corn since that's what's in the food he's eating now. Don't give him any treats or canned food unless they have the same ingredients as his food. Change him over slowly so he doesn't get an upset stomach. Once on the new food it will take at least a few weeks to see if it helps. In addition to trying a simple food without the same protein and carb source as the food you're feeding now, bathing with an oatmeal shampoo helps as does a good conditioner. I use Epi-Soothe by Virbac;  [linkhttp://www.virbacvet.com/product_guide/allergicderm.html]http://www.virbacvet.com/product_guide/allergicderm.html[/link];   For a conditioner you could try RESISOOTHE LEAVE ON LOTION or one of their other conditioners. I get them at the vet but you may be able to order them online. Your vet probably carries some good shampoos and conditioners in other brands if he doesn't carry Virbac.

Hi! My dog is going through the same thing right now. Our Vet said that he might have a food allergy and recommended Eukanuba FP (prescribed). It is pretty pricey for us and we have started using Natures Recipe with Fish Meal and Potato. It hasn't been helping though :( It has only been a few weeks but his dandruff and itching isn't getting any better. Good Luck
