Over the Counter Flea and Tick Control

Hello, I am a new memeber.  Was just visiting the PetSmart web site and came across a chart comparing the over the counter flea products with a couple that are purchased by prescription only.  There is one called Sentry Pro that had all the same attributes as Frontline Plus (which I have been using) but a whole lot cheaper.  I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this or has heard anything about it.

I'm not sure about Sentry, but there are a number of cheaper flea control products that do cause problems. Hartz, of course, is constantly recalling something, and Biospot has also had problems. I haven't heard of Sentry, however, so I'd like to see what others have to say as well.

    Hello [:)]

I guess that with "the same attributes" you mean to say that both claim they rid your pet of fleas and ticks. Otherwise, they are very different in their active ingredients. That is important in so far, as Frontline is actually one of the most effective squeeze ons there is, with often getting close to 100% results. Sentry gets considerably less (about 90% if I recall right), and furthermore contains a pesticide. Tthat means, an ingredient that has an established lethal dosage which is low - therefore it is a pesticide - and that requires special handling precautions as to federal regulations (for the pesticide in Sentry the LD 50 is 800mg/kg dermal and 430 mg/kg oral). Pesticides, even if given or applied in lesser volumes, can still cause damage through accumulation and/or cumulative interruption of physiological processes, and in worst case outright kill (remember, LD50 means that half of the test animals died; at lesser concentrations some might die also). With products like Sentry or Hartz vs Frontline and K9 Advantix it is simply like this: if one can afford it, get one of the latter two. They are more effective and less harmful. If one cannot or does not want to afford them, one should get one of the others, as they are often better than no protection at all, but then only apply them in the months where fleas and ticks are very active.

Hope that helps a bit [:)]

That helps a lot actually.  I figured there had to be something fishy about it.   Usually when the price on something is lower, there is something that needs to be given up.  In this case, long term health of your dog.  Of course, part of me always hopes to get the best results for the least amount of money!  Sounds like we best continue with Frontline.  This will be my second "season" with Baily and we had very good luck with him last year.  No fleas at all and only one tick after spending the weekend "Up North at the Cabin".    We also use Revolution (another Vet only product) on our cats with very good results.  Keeping all 4 of the critters protected gets exspensive, but I would rather they be healthy.
    Thanks for the information!
