    Thinning Coat along her Spine

I have noticed that my female Pomeranian (~4 months old) has lost some hair (or her top coat has shed, because the hair is shorter than the rest of her coat) along her spine. Is this normal? I know that they have to shed in order to get their adult coat but it seems too early for that? Maybe I'm wrong? Help!

What a cutie! What food does she eat?

You know what....it's funny you say this because my mother and grandmother CRINGED when they heard what kind of food I was feeding her...Purina Puppy Chow. :(  I really just buy it out of convenience at the local rite aid, because we don't have any other kind of pet store or even a real grocery store downtown. Do you think this is the reason?!

That definitely isn't helping at all.  I would suggest a premium food.  You can buy a big bag once in a while so you don't have to drive far very often.  Just store it in a good container, or even in bags in the freezer if you have space.  It will save you money buying bigger bags since it is cheaper that way and you won't have to travel as often.

And you can buy it online if you can't find it locally.

Poms do go thru a stage where they are naked and/or lose  alot of coat....read below..
Reading the below I'd advise asking your breeder about the coat changes their line goes thru...a Northern breed blowing puppy coat the first time can alarm owners unduly.

"I have sold Pomeranian puppies at 8/10 weeks of age,Pomeranian babies with beautiful full fluffy baby coats, only to have a phone call from a very upset owner when this Pomeranian was 5 to 6 months of age to tell me that I had sold them a crossbreed- Their Pomeranian had no coat!! I patiently explain that this is called the puppy uglies and that nearly all Pomeranian puppies have to go through this awkward stage of adolescent and assure the distressed owner the ugly ducking will turn into a swan at 9 to 10 months of age. Then I have to explain about the 12 month shed of his first adult coat, about girls and seasons etc. etc.etc. "

Groomers sometimes sell good foods. I have found that here where I live. I feed Trudy Natural Balance Fish. There are other kinds like Venison, duck etc. I feed the kibble and a bit of canned. Even if the Pom is supposed to get thin, the good food is always good for her.

OK So, I've been looking at good food online & plan on talking my husband into switching over soon. Do you think that she could be just going through the "pom uglies" sooner (shes about 4 months) than other puppies?

She is so cute! I think that's a good possibility unless she's itching and may have a flea allergy. I agree that there are probably better foods than Purina for your puppy but that wouldn't cause the thinning coat.
