Addison's Crisis Part 2

    Addison's Crisis Part 2

About 3 or 4 years ago a good friend of mines Saint was diagnosed with Addison's.  He was in crisis at that time.  He was put on some meds & he seemed to be okay.  Fast forward to last week.  I got an e-mail from my friend saying that Ralphie was in crisis again.  It's not looking good now.  He has developed cirrhosis (SP?) of the liver & has been given a death sentence.  Those are all the details I know now.  What I need to know is what can I tell Laurie to do for Ralphie to make him more comfortable & possibly give him a better quality of his remaining life.

I would look into some of the Addison's support groups on the net, I just googled and there are several. Those folks should be able to tell you (or her, rather) exactly what to expect and have been-there advice to give.

When Foxy had that huge liver infection 2 years ago I was astounded at how much acupuncture/Chinese herbals did for him -- I would recommend it in a heartbeat.  [linkhttp://www.tcvm.com]http://www.tcvm.com[/link] -- there's a locator there.

The liver CAN regenerate -- it's the only organ that can, and man I would not give up trying.

Absolutely join the Addison's Yahoo group, they even have a vet who joined. They are an extremely informative bunch of owners.

Many vets and owners need a lot of help managing Addison's successfully, but it is possible and when done correctly the animal leads a very normal long life.
I'm with Callie, I wouldn't accept the death sentence, there is often hope where no one sees it.

By the way, Addison's can even mimic liver disease (Addison's is called the Great Pretender). It may just be that this dog's Addison's was incorrectly managed (not many vets are fully aware of all aspects of treatment). Again, I would urge you to join the K9 Addison's group for info.

Clyde went into Addisions crisis and spent 8 days at Ocean state Vet in RI. They didn't think he would make it through the night, not knowing at the time it was Addisions. Clyde since diagnosed has been doing better than ever on 5mg pred every other day and a DOCP shot every 28 days. Addisions disease to a dog is like a person with diabeties (sort a speak) this is how the VET explained it to me. Dogs with addisions when treated properly will live a normal life and will die of something other than addisions.
Clyde had a mini crisis a few months ago the only one since his diagnoses over a year 1/2 ago. Clyde had his teeth cleaned, he got very stressed because he doesn't like to be crated and had a mini crisis. I took him to Ocean State they gave him a shot of pred and fluids and since has been perfect.

I hope your friends dog makes it through everything, yahoo groups has a lot of info and many opinions but finding a vet or Animal hospital they specialize in certain diseases would be best.

Cirrhosis in dogs can cause encephalopathy, just as with humans.  If that's the case, she may want to talk to the vet about supportive care such as lactulose.  Of course, it can also be fatal.  But, my dog lived three years after a diagnosis that should have taken her in a year or just a bit more, so I'm a believer in using a holistic approach.
B Naturals has products for dogs that support liver health.  (I used their kidney pack for my dog, and added Ester-C and E, per the instructions of a holistic vet.)
