Dog throwing up only after food

    Hi Everybody,

I feel like I know everybody because I am an addicted lurker. I really need some help this time from all you knowledgeable dog people.

My  7 yr. old 14 lb. chi/mix [we think got stung by something]. I took him to the vet yesterday and they gave him a benedryl injection because I noticed that his eye was getting red and swollen. Boy these stings really wreak havoc with their body.

Since then he has not been able to keep food down immediately after eating.

I talked to the holistic vet who was there today and inquired about peppermint or chamomille tea and she gave me the go ahead with a little soft, bland food. It happened again.

He is drinking, fill time on gums seem fine and all his potties are normal.

Oh by the way, he did have a 3  year rabies vac [not Fort Dodge] last week. The vet said that if anything was going to happen, it would of immediately after it was administered.

Does anybody have any feedback on this situation?

    I will be very grateful.

Could someone please help me before I leave for the animal emergency?

He is not acting lethargic but we all know our own dogs.

    Thank you.

Was he throwing up before he got stung?...Have you changed foods?

Thank you so much for reading my post.

He threw up the night before I took him to the vet which was Tuesday. The swelling did not show up til Wed. at 5PM when I rushed him in because there were no signs that he had been stung.

The vet showed me where on the his body he was probably stung and some of the hives on his body.

He is due for another Benedry but I am afraid to give it to him.

    Thank you.

I know it's really hard to know what to do for them..if only they could talk...I wish I could help you more...maybe for your own peace of mind you should take him back to the vet..Good luck

I am really an oversheltering mommy to him. I am debating on going to the e-vet or waiting until tomorrow.

I forgot to tell you that I homecook with a little kibble at the end of the day.

He get little meals so he can digest them easier.

    Thank you.

Do you think that I should post in a busier section?

There are more people in the Everything and Anything tread.. you could try there

I say call the e-vet explain all the symptoms and what's been going on and see if they suggest you bring him right in or based on what you tell them if it's safe to wait until morning.

I called earlier this evening and their reply is always that we can't tell until you bring him in.

I am watching him very closely and am almost out the door.

The last time that he was this ill was two years ago after another sting. Is there some kind of tea that I can put on his hives to settle them down? Would the peppermint or chamomile work?

I have already called my vet and used up all her tape and told her to probably expect me when she opens in the morning. I am not a morning person except when it comes to my baby.

    Thanks Lori

So, he's acting like he doesn't feel good aside from the vomiting??
    • Bronze
He is probably hungry because nothing has stayed down. I feel guilty eating in front of him.

So therefore I don't think that he is lethargic. He walked outside fine. Did nothing but pee because there is nothing else in his stomach.

I am just staring at him?

    BTW how does lethargic act?

    Thx a bunch

Well, is he panting or acting like he's in pain at all?  Does he show interest in things, like if you say, cookie or go for a walk, or whatever his favorites are does he seem willing to go??

I don't think it's the Benedryl that's causing this.  It has a strong anti nausea side effect that's why they use it for motion sickness sometimes.

Marco is a very stoic dog who doesn't talk to me. He is not panting at all and he does go outside. He only threw up once after eating. No dry heaves or blood or anything, just undigested food.
Do you think that it would be safe to give him another benedryl now? He is due for one. Do you think the reason he vomited is because I gave him the benedryl right before his meal?

;Poor thing is just laying on the back of the couch staring at me and trying to tell me I don't know what.

If you were me would you rush to e-vet or just wait another couple hours until my vet?

The only bad thing is that I am currently unemployed and you know when it rains it poors. I was fighting the rabies but you know the law.

Ask Willow what Marco is thinking.
    She is really beautiful.

I'd go ahead with the Benadryl. As another poster said, it helps with nausea and my vet always recommends Benadryl for bee stings - almost every summer on the nose. Good luck and let us know what you do and how your baby is.

I want to thank everybody for helping with my dilemna late last night.

I decided to become proactive and took it upon myself to watch the little darling  literally all night to see if there were any changes just as the e-vet told me to do instead of going there and paying $95 just to walk in the door.

Benedryl was given at 2 am. and he was back to almost his old self this morning. The food has stayed down all day. I think what my problem was that he was getting fed too soon after receiving the Benedryl. Neither vet could figure that out for me.

I have one more question. He is getting some bumps on the crown of his head in different spots and then they disappear after I give him Benedryl.  Are those also part of the hives?

You guys are just great. Anytime somebody tells me they have a dog and start asking questions I refer them to this sight. I don't want to sound like a know-it-all even after taking notes for about a year and graduating with an I-Dog.com degree. I like them to read about it themselves. It is amazing how many have changed into really good doggy parents.

Someday I will figure out how to post a pic of him with my webtv. Does anybody have webtv and can tell me?
