    Labs BURPING

Hi I have a 3 yr old Lab who is burping about every 15 min. I can't think of anything diet or snack wise that has changed...anyone have any ideas? Can you give a dog TUMS? If so how many? He's 110 lbs. Thank you so much for any ideas or suggestions.....David in Az.

I don't know about the Tums, but how long has he been doing this?  If its just been lately, have you changed his food or given him anything to eat or drink that is new?

David--hi. Haven't heard from you all in awhile.

They can have pepto bismal. I'd check the back and go for the weight thing.

I'd say he's been doing it about 3 months now.  I can't think of anything in his diet that has changed nor his snacks.   Since TUMS are basically calcium I can't think they would hurt him..I'll try a few and see if they help. I just thought maybe there might be something else going on. Thanks for the help. Glad to be back...lost you guys for a while.

    Let us know, okay?
Just for the record, I may be wrong but I thought I just read yesterday to not give dogs calcium.  Sure its too late now, but I'd check into that if I were you. If I could remember where I was when I thought I read that, I'd pass it along. Sorry!
Well, please let us know if they help!

Dyan, my Hunter dog ate an entire bottle of Tums once and it did him no harm at all. Except he burped up a lot of minty burps for about eight hours!!! Hunter was a Chesapeake/Aussie mix. He looked just like Clifford, the Big Red Dog.

David, somehow that experience doesn't lead me to believe that Tums would help your dog! I'd try the Pepto if it is stomach upset. But how much burping are we talking about? If he wolfs his food down, that's probably the reason. You can slow down his eating and see if he burps less.

Please take your dog to the vet to figure out the CAUSE of the burping.  You don't want to be shoving Tums down his throat...they ARE mostly calcium and you can totally screw up that critical phosperous/calcium ratio.  And THAT can result in some heavy duty bone problems.
